Rum Company of Fiji Ratu Dark 5-Year

This rum is a little bit like Bundaberg rum except not absolute garbage. It's still far too sickly to be enjoyable but the smell of it didn't kill any of my pets, so that's a plus.

Dark Amber colour, chemical aroma’s, round taste, bit sweet

Right away there is a clear scent of solvents and it takes some time (over 15 min.) before you get some real rum scents; vanilla, spices and flowers you should have thrown out earlier (not in a bad way I guess) but mostly fudge.

On the palate there is a clear presence of alcohol, spice, a little fudge but also resin. The combination of resin, spices and a little burn from the alcohol pushes out most of the other notes so all in all not that well balanced. It is also rather sweet but thanks to the bitter ending this sweetness doesn't stand out too much. It is actually the bitter ending that makes it a drinkable rum for me but I don't think I will 'return' to Fiji anymore.

I did not like this one at all. In fact, it does not taste like rum.

Does not really smell or taste like rum. Very untypical. Tastes pretty stale and rotten to me. Cannot describe better because it was too ugly for me. (Cal 2019 day 8)

Nez puissant mais pas très agréable.
une note boisée, une fugace note de vanille.
Pas très agréable sans que je puise identifier ce que je bois.

Jeg kan fornemme lidt røg og æble i duften. Røg, men ikke for meget i starten, så kommer en lidt sødlig smag, måske lidt vanilje, inden det kommer en smag af træ, måske lidt eg. Man kan også fornemme lidt nødder. For hver tår overtager røgen mere og mere. Det trækker ned, men stadig en rom over middel. (8. December 2019 i 1423)

The Ratu 5 year old dark is my first Fiji rum. While not bad, it's not making me want to search out others in the future. The nose is very strong of alcohol, licorice and a little cocoa. The first taste is very spicy with hints of oak, cocoa and alcohol. I. would use this in the future as a mixer but probably stay away as a sipper.
