Tasty, but not quite great
40% ABV. I'm assuming this is basically eclipse infused with mauby bark. There's quite a lot of ethanol on the nose after first pour (similar to Eclipse), and notes of cane. But there's also loads of spice from the mauby: cinnamon, lavender, orange, and white pepper. It's very dry, and I don't imagine much (if any) sugar has been added. The mauby also has a slight numbing effect, which I assume would inhibit taste reception, so be aware of that when deploying this in cocktails: focus on the aromas (it's probably also lovely in Coke).
I want to rate this an 8- for novelty and complexity, but really the quality of the rum is just "ok". Would be interesting to try a higher quality of mauby rum sometime. But it's still, as I said, super interesting, and would be a more than welcome addition to US liquor store shelves over-crowded with spiced rums that are total crap.
A colleagues who visited Barbados a while ago, returned with a few gems from the distillery.
This is the first of them.
The Mauby Rum. It's distilled with Mauby bark, lime peel and Natural Spices.
It is smooth with a light aroma, slightly smokey, with lime zest and toasted herbs.
The taste is light and spicy.
A good summer sipper!
This was my first venture in the rum world beyond Captain Morgan, Bacardi, and Kraken and it was disappointing. It felt more like a whiskey than a rum and was way too harsh/alcoholic for me to enjoy it.
Sugar: Estimated at 5 GPL. This rum has an unusual aroma and taste. It smells like a wet cedar shingle, citrus and pepper spice. That odd taste comes from the Mauby bark used as the infusion. I didn't really care for it. The taste is strong with a harsh nose and taste. It's a spiced rum that is meant for a different palate than mine. I shared some with my wife and she took one sip and handed it back to me with a no thanks. This rum would need to be hidden inside of a mixed drink. It's not good on it's own.
