Dominican Republic | Aged | 40% ABV
Matusalem Gran Reserva 15-year rum is produced using a combination of rums aged on average 15 years and distilled from molasses using the solera process.
The Matusalem company was established in 1872 originally in Santiago de Cuba. The company fled the country following the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and the Gran Reserva rum is now produced in the Dominican Republic.

I usually drink my rum with cola. I found this one to have a pleasant starting taste, but then there was something unexpected, and not really rum-like in the taste. It was disappointing as I have been really curious about this rum for many years. I probably won't buy it again.
I like it. Start is very strong, but and is so hot and pleasant.
The smell reminds me of Dzama vanilla. It is definitely a thinner rum with a bit of that flavour also present in dzama. Vanilla? Warm vanilla yes. Not too much finish but still a very enjoyable basic rum for a 15 year Solera. Especially given the cheaper price tag, ($34CAD). It didn't last too long!
Although not made in Cuba anymore, now in the Dominican Republic, this rum is great for making a Cuba Libre cocktail. It has hints of vanilla and sweetness of Toffee but it makes a great cocktail. It doesn't have a tobacco flavour like some Cuban rums but hey, it's not made in Cuba anymore!
A bit vegetative but also falls a wee bit flat in the flavour department. Smooth for the price but not as good as an offering as I thought Id be getting based on other Matusalem's Ive had. Still worth a purchase to try though, for sure.
By taste you can already tell this has experienced a longer aging than the average rum.
It has resulted in a more smooth experience through every sip, that never ceases to amaze me.
Smooth and very well blended.
"The aftertaste is quite spicy and hot. Not in an alcohol burn way."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label
