Matusalem Gran Reserva 15-year rum is produced using a combination of rums aged on average 15 years and distilled from molasses using the solera process.
The Matusalem company was established in 1872 originally in Santiago de Cuba. The company fled the country following the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and the Gran Reserva rum is now produced in the Dominican Republic.

With that ambiguous age statement you straight away know that this rum is all about appearances and marketing. Sure the average age of the rums used is 15 years but what about the quantities? It is very cuban, light, sweet, lots of caramel, a bit boozy and a bit watery. Good as a mixer and fine if nothing else on hand but not your first choice.
very disappointed with this one, not cheap but not as good as the name, not complexe, short taste and thin, without any character, It tasted good but just sweet and annoying .. i won't buy it again
This is so average, that you can miss it. And if you try it, you'll forget it soon.
I try it straight & with cola but this is not my taste.
Sweet at beginning but later flat & alcoholic aftertaste.
I don't buy it again.
This is a rather boring rum without any charactestics or memorable impression.
It does however make a great companion in cola or as a ingredients in food.
I edited my previous review because I purchased a bottle for the Year's Eve. It's quite plain tasting, with a sweetish vanilla aftertaste that reminds me of Captain Morgan's, albeit better and with less burn. I think it would be ok to mix with Cola, as I did, and certainly better than the aforementioned Morgan or Bacardi, yet I wouldn't recommend it alone.
An important side note: it doesn't come cheap, at least in my country. I believe that its price doesn't reflect its worth.
This has sat in my cabinet for over a year and I have no memories associated with it...hmmmm...Ran out of Diplomatico Gran Reserva, so I had some of this and, well...virtually no flavor or umpf...don't waste your money...
It's smooth to the pallet, but very standard. Muscovado, molasses, vanilla, a hint of oranges. Very strong and a little awkward alcohol smell when you first meet the glass. I think I'd rather use this as a mixer or to do rum raisins for ice cream. Kind of disappointing since this 15 year old cost a bit and is supposed to be one of their flagships...
If this rum was a sound, imagine going into a small room with dirty beige walls.
You scream from the top of your lungs, and you expect the sound to reverberate and echo.
But nothing. No echo. The sound stops when you stop. And that's it.
That's this rum. It doesn't make a dent anywhere.
Coke should just take over this brand and resell as stuff to mix with. Can’t drink it neat and keep a smile so on to the next one. Again if you’re a mai tai drinker then by all means otherwise EJECT
I had high hopes when I opened this one. It let me down straight away. Tasted like burnt acid. I doubt I will ever finish this one. Maybe some day I'll give it another try.
I bought this bottle after finnishing another Dominican Republic rum (Presidente-15 Year). After paying approximately the same amount of money and drinking the very first sip, I knew that buying this rum was a mistake. Very flat taste with something idescribable in the background, which I found very disturbing. I definitely do not recommend, the rum is not worth the money. Buy Presidente-15 Year instead. 40%
Not my type of rum. To much alcohol coming through. Works well for drinks.
Maybe someone likes it but I know I won't buy anymore.
Mot much smell, strong, no bouquet
This one was a disapointment for me.. A bit overrated from my friends. The taste is to much ethanol for me.. And to thin. It almost feels like somebody thinned it out with pure alcohol. It tasted good in cola but for the hefty price i would prefer to drink it as a zipping rum.
