Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum is produced using a combination of rums aged on average 15 years and distilled from molasses using the solera process.
The Matusalem company was established in 1872 originally in Santiago de Cuba. The company fled the country following the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and the Gran Reserva rum is now produced in the Dominican Republic.
I am a fan of Matusalem, though there are Rums that I like better. I have no complaints about this 18 year, but it is just a tier below my favorites. So a 7 seems to be just about right and I do like 7s :)
Sugar: 8 gpl. I had my doubts but they went away once this was in the glass. A very nice aroma of butterscotch, vanilla, and a hint of coconut and raisins. Oak is in the background aroma as well as the taste. Very smooth with a nice finish. Not harsh at all but just the right amount of heat. Nice sipping rum. I wouldn't mix this as I don't like too sweet a drink, but if you wanted to it would be a great drink.
I tasted this Matusalem and found it to be a textbook example of Cuban ron. I was very impressed with both the nose and lack of alcohol burn. The absence of alcohol burn was achieved without being sweet. Although not able to at the time, I imagine the Matusalem would go well with a Cuban cigar.
Someone handed me a nip of this one the other day, thinking it was going to be something quite special. I wasn't thrown back by it, just a good standard rum.
Poured a little of this in my snifter and immediately noted a nice subtle vanilla scent. Very nice legs indicative by the rum clinging to the sides of the snifter after a good swirl. The color is a rich amber. The flavor supports the vanilla aroma and also has a pepperiness to it and a noticeable oakiness which I presume come from the barrels in which it is aged. It does have some sweetness to it that seems to be natural and not sugared (but that's just my opinion). Definitely a nice sipping rum which also could be effective as a mixer. This is a good, all-purpose rum but I think it is better suited for sipping.
Very similar to the Matusalem 15. Smells and tastes of oak, caramel, spice, with a touch of honey. The biggest difference is that the aftertaste isn't as harsh. Has a touch of sweetness, but still a bit on the dry side for my liking.
An almost Cuban, I drink this and feel like Ricky waiting for Lucy to mess up again.

I would add that it is a bit more complex and has more "layers", overall better !
The price is a little higher. I wondr (hand have not been able to decide) if the difference in price is completely justified, but it should not prevent you from trying it.
I have been a fan of it's younger 15 year solera for about 20 years. I finally saw this older brother on the shelf today for only one dollar more. It is indeed the better buy. The aroma and taste are quite rich and sweet with minimal added sugar. A nice addition to my collection.

I enjoyed the Ron Metusalem 15 but the 18 is so much better. This is definitely going to be a keeper in my cabinet.

The initial nose is pleasant, the colour is a nice dark amber, very good legs and a very good mouth feel.
Subdued tastes of vanilla and raisins from a very smooth rum which is quite simply a treat to the palette.
Goût boisé, caramel, épice et un peu sucré. Bon rhum de style cubain.
Desde el olfato hasta el gusto un ron de cuerpo, suavidad y aroma muy bueno.
Lo único que no me gustó fue que tiene dispensador y no corcho...
Very good rum and well priced. Sweet notes but not as complex as Zacapa 23 and Zafra. Good for sipping.
Vacation in Acapulco and tasting Matusalem Gran Reserva 18y and Botran Solera 1893 18y back-to-back. Matusalem has a decent bottle design, very cheap cardboard box and tacky labeling. Color is semi dark with vanilla intruding both nose and palate. Some burn at the end. Mix it with Coke or Ginger Ale and down it goes. Matusalem 5 - Botran 7.
Tried on the recommendation of employee at liquor store. Great recommendation. Chilled adds a whole new dimension to this rum. I know this is not a surprise but it went from a 5 to an 8 after chilling.
Nice one for sipping especially on rocks. It's not perfect but I appreciate it is an overall nice experience - not lacking in any of the rum aspects. And it kinda grows on me so I may rank it even higher later.
Its a good rum for the Cubas Libres and you can drink it in the rocks!
Love this rum just as much as the other in the Matsulem line. Smooth, refreshing, crisp, complex falcons for the nose and palate. Not a bad price considering what your buying...a high class rum from the DR.
Please drink this neat or add an ice cube to evoke other flavors.

Exceptionally smooth finish and nice sweet flavors without being loaded with sugar. I taste a combination of mild oak, caramel (in the way of sweetened puffed rice like "Golden Crisp" cereal), and vanilla. All combined it somehow brings forth a prominent chocolatey taste. Slightly viscous but not syrupy. I'm happy with this purchase as there is no cloying flavors, its slightly sweet, and it's different than anything else I've tasted. Exactly what I look for when trying new rums.

No wonder Hemingway moved there. Thoroughly enjoyable sipper. Can't imagine mixing. As others have said copious amounts of butterscotch and vanilla with oak and tobacco hints to be enjoyed with very little burn. I kept hoping Ricky Ricardo and his band would suddenly morph into my my man cave as I was sipping this rich little treat.
