Canada | Flavored | 21% ABV

Malibu Coconut Rum is distilled from fermented molasses and blended with coconut and sugar. The brand is owned by one of the world's largest spirits producers, Pernod Ricard.

Currently produced in Canada, Malibu Coconut rum was originally made in Curaçao from fruit spirits flavored with coconut and rum. The original recipe was developed as a shortcut for bartenders making Piña Coladas, however today the stands on its own.

Malibu Coconut Rum…Malibu is synonymous with the flavored rum category. Heck they might have invented it! Isn’t this usually everyone’s first coconut rum? Here I am just now getting to it. Was it worth the wait? Nope.

The aroma when I first opened the bottle was very nice. Pretty much what i expected. The smell suntan lotion. It’s like being poolside at a cheap hotel on a hot day. The taste? I was a bit let down. Sure there was some coconut and sugar. Lots of sugar really. But still I can’t believe with all that sweet how much of a bitter finish there is in Malibu Coconut Rum. Quite a bit of astringency for only clocking in at 42 octane. Even with a very small amount in my standard Tampico Citrus Punch that bitter finish just reared it’s ugly…tail.

The verdict? I will stick to Whaler’s or Cruzan for my low octane coconut rum mixers. Parrot Bay 90 proof coconut rum when I need some kick.

I drink this mostly as a liqueur. It's very sweet and coconut flavour is dominant. But I like sweet and I like coconut :D Also perfect for drink mixing.

I guess if there's nothing else to drink this will do in a pinch, but it feels like you're drinking suntan lotion. Maybe a drink if you're in your 20s, but after that, I'm not too sure!

Nice sweet rum, too sugary for some, making it a bit of a weak rum. Mixes very well with most common mixed drinks.

Sweet, nice smelling liquere. The best coconut liquere I have tasted. But the flavouring is so strog, you can't call it a rum and you're not able to rate the quality of the rum base. Fine to take a one shot of it, not more.

Ok, if you are drinking this rum for the rum flavor you will be disappointed, but welcome back to earth, this is a mixing rum, drink it straight and you will be so sad we may just have to call your momma. Drink it for what it is worth, something with a tinny umbrella, a chunk of pineapple and cherry on top if just fitting for it..

I was surprised to see this up for reviewing on a rum website as I thought it was a liqueur. Since I am able to rate it, I will. Very tasty in juice and other drinks requiring coconut flavour. The ethanol content is not super strong, however and so even when I create my pina coladas and other mixed drinks I find myself adding pure rum to the mix along with the malibu. Actually, it is really difficult to rate...as a rum, probably not the greatest, but as an alcoholic beverage it is great!

Used to consume this in mass quantities with pineapple juice, so much so that local bartenders called me "_______ Malibu." Light on the proof - more like a rum-infused coconut drink - but a perfectly acceptable Sunday afternoon seaside rum in sufficient quantity. Again, this really belongs between a 5 and a 6 IMO (5.5), but again, rounding down, if for no other reason than for the low ABV.
