I like this rum for only $18.99 (Total Wines & More, 2017 price).
Smells and tastes of charred oak, spice, caramel, and maybe a hint of cognac. Not sweet.
Decent, though I prefer slightly sweeter rums.

This is another great plantation rum! And it costs less then a Captain Morgan! But this one you can enjoy as a sipper. A CM you can't drink without coke, at least the cheaper ones. And if you want to mix it you will never go back to rums like CM. The smell is smooth full of arrak, vanilla and banana. It have a quite oaky sweet taste of vanilla, arrak, rumraisins and banana. I have a feeling that a bottle of plantation original dark will always be in my cabinet. A cold winterday blend this with hot chocolate and some whipped cream on top and you will be amazed! Go and buy now, a must have!

Nice bronze color. On the nose are notes of exotic fruits with banana and spices with a light smoky side. In the mouth, it is very sweet, not very long. An excellent rum for cocktails.

I drink my rum straight usually and you can drink this straight. Nose is molasses as is the flavour.

Had this last night at our local brew pub. They use this as their well rum! Tasty fruit and brown sugar note. Kind of sweet, but not too much. I'll have to buy a bottle for myself.

Very nice, smooth, dark rum.. there are plenty of rum options at this price, but none of them are as good as this one!

Vanilla and a faint citrus note on the nose. Both transfer to the taste. Not much to of a burn going down. Absolutely love mixing drinks with this one.

Decently smooth with a good taste and just a bit of funk. The relatively affordable price makes it great for mixing.

Subdued Jamaican HOGO funk

The extensive information on the back of the label states that it is mostly thin aged Trinidad rum mixed with some aged Jamaican pot still rum rich in HOGO funk. In the 1800's, this combined effect was quite desirable and still is, but mostly in Jamaican circles. As for me, I was glad to finally bid farewell to my funky Jamaican Appleton 12 Year Reserve Blend some time ago. The HOGO funk in this Plantation rum is a lot more subdued and you get it on the aroma and going down the pipe. On the tongue, the funky taste is strangely absent and replaced by fruity caramel. At 80 proof, I am sipping it neat and have no need to add ice or water. It would work really well in Tiki drinks that require two different rums and at a much cheaper cost of only $17 per liter. I would definitely buy this versatile rum again.
As for referring to this Plantation Original Dark Rum as the little brother to their OFTD Overproof, that is not even close. Yes, both have a Jamaican component, but the Trinidad part in this one is replaced in the OFTD by aged rums from Guyana and Barbados. That two-for-one switch is what makes their OFTD better than this one.
Update July 12, 2019: In my overall rankings, I had this one ranked higher than El Dorado 21, so I had to do a side by side taste test to make sure. Sure enough, I got it right the first time! Save your money and get this one instead!
Update May 6, 2020: I got a hold of some locally made wildflower honey, so I just had to try mixing some with this rum. Add 2 parts of this rum to 1 part of wildflower honey and you can come pretty darn close to the poor man's version of Plantation XO 20th Anniversary. I kid you not!
