The story of this rum is that Don Francisco Fernandez left his post as master distiller at Havana Club and moved to Panama. This 7-year rum was distilled by him in Panama primarily for the Spanish market and no more than 6000 bottles were labeled and even less put on the market.
The rum: A bit darker than many 7-year rums and a distinct Cuban dryness to counter a dark molasses touch. It has a slightly boozy nose and first sip, but calms quick enough (not wholly unlike Santiago de Cuba's 12-yr, though not at all as refined). There is a nutty taste with dried fruit and some oaky flavors pleasingly detectable, but maybe lacks a little on the finish. A plus, plus mixer and certainly not helpless as a sipper. Likely categorically comparable to Abuelo 7-yr with a similar function in the home bar however the Abuelo 7 is for me notably superior. Also plus points for rarity and value €21. Ultimately a hidden little gem blending nicely South American flavors with Cuban touch.
