Rum tasting in Bruxelles started with Delhaize Indonesian 2y Rum. Decent but unique bottle and label design. Light golden color. Strong unaged alcohol mixed with plenty of tropical fruits to your nose and palate when neat sipped. Strong and sweet burn at the end. Better mixed than neat sipped for sure.
This Indonesian Rum from Delhaize - a popular Low Countries grocer with own-brand liquors - is a blend of Java Island rums aged for 2 years in vats of the local Djati wood. It is unusual enough I might not have placed it as a rum, given that the dominant flavour is that of exotic tropical fruit including the rind - so overall bitter but in a quality, sophisticated manner - complemented by subtler flavours of chocolate & tobacco. Quite drinkable by itself for those who like bitter-flavour apertifs, tho I would tend to put a sugar cube in it along with the ice if drinking straight. The strong bitter tropical fruit taste makes it a terrific mixer, the rum flavour (if you can call it that) still coming through. Bottle says 'Classic Dark' but really a golden rum in colour.
