Trinidad and Tobago | Spiced | 40% ABV | Column Still (1-4) Distilled

Kraken Black Spiced Rum was first introduced by Proximo Spirits in 2010 . The dark rum is infused with 11 “secret” spices, caramel and other natural flavors.

The rum gets its name after the mythical sea creature 'The Kraken'. As legend has it, this terrifying creature attacked ships at sea during the 18th and 19th centuries - possibly for all the rum on board.

Kraken Black Spiced 40% (Caribbean/USA)

Eye: Crazy dark, thick Coke

Nose: Loads of marzipan, arrack and modeling clay to begin with. A bit "strong" at first but mellows very quickly and turns soft, almost weak, like an old, used battery you find in a drawer. It actually smells of Coke and perhaps it is designed to function as a mixer? Then artificial vanilla appears together with embrowned butter, burnt sugar, some orange and a second, even stronger, wave of arrack. It's not an off-putting smell, just not a smell that suggests something edible (read: drinkable). It's very artificial, cheap and appears to be very young.

Mouth: Oh dear. Where to start? It's very sweet and one dimensional. It actually hurts, not only me teeth but my intellect as well with its simple and lazy attitude. Lots of arrack of course (we were warned), vanilla, fresh cut, wet tobacco, chocolate and dried orange. It's like drinking "treacle & Coke". We have burnt sugar with some anonymous spices and not much else. But even so, it's not unpleasant. The ABV is actually well balanced and perfect for this one but the sugar level is through the roof and can´t be disregarded.

Reaction: I got a heads up from my friend about this one (an excuse in advance for the sample really) and with that in mind I did expect something quite nasty. This is not nasty, but rather tasty in its own weird way. However, I don't see it as a drink as much as a drink ingredient. Now, I don't tend to drink cocktails and such so for me Kraken Black Spiced will end up on the same memory-heap as many other single dimension alcoholic beverages. I never drink spirits on the rocks but with this one I might reconsider. Maybe it can be a part of an experimental lamb rack glazing or something like that?

I drink it neat, like I do all rum, so my rating is based on that, its good just a bit harsh and has this spicy thing going on. Good if there's no zacapa around

Pleasant spiced rum and a good starting point for beginners getting into dark rum, but perhaps it's become a bit of a Jack Daniel's of the rum world? Still, I wouldn't kick it out of the rum cabinet!

As a traditionalist, I don't do spiced rums, but this one is the exception. Kraken is good enough to sip with a few rocks -- the spice doesn't overwhelm the "rum" and blends nicely with the senses. Not a bad starter rum for non-rum drinkers.

The nose is sharp with vanilla, toffee, warm spices and a little alcohol tinge. For a higher proof, the alcohol isn't overwhelming. The flavor follows the nose and the rich vanilla is the star. I'm not one to sip spiced rum however, the little extra warmth from the 47% ABV, really sets off the warming spices and brings everything together into a wallop of flavor. Excellent in any cocktail and can't wait to try it in baking dishes. Yes...Kraken, you are one good spiced rum!

I give it a 9. It's a dark rum very good spice. I like shots so it for that and at 47%, and I like that.

L'habit ne fait pas le moine : beau flacon, couleur qui attise la curiosité, nez flatteur... mais en bouche le caramel masque tout le reste.... dommage.
