I really like the Koloa rums. In fact, as of this review I think they make the best dark rum, the best coconut rum, and the best coffee rum I've ever tried. Now I think they make the best spiced rum as well!

A lot of other reviewers said this was too sweet for them. I even saw a review of a different rum that said "This rum contains a large amount of added sugar. Downgraded from 10 to 5." I personally care about a rum's taste, not sugar. I feel that the 44%abv of this rum really complements the sweetness very well. I love it straight! Has a really nice spiced flavor too.

Tastes and smells of sugar and spice... and everything nice (ok, I'm struggling to describe the spice), but it really is quite good. In fact, this is one of the few rums I'm rating well above the consensus rating (I typically rate rums about a point below the consensus).

If you don't mind a little extra sweetness in your rum, you should give this one a try. I think you'll like it, but even if you don't, I sure do! :-) The best of the Koloa's imho.

I do not always like spiced rum, but this is like dessert for me. I really love the scent and the smooth flavor. It makes excellent mixed drinks.

One of the sweeter rums i drank. The taste is smooth and sweet followed by the burn and then lastly the spice burn. Has all the typical flavors and smells you would find in in rum. I find the spice enhances the taste rather then trying to hide it. Good for drinking shots or making drinks.

For $25 dollars i couldn't find anything else better.

However my personal recommendation is if your drinking shots or making drinks, put the bottle in the freezer, it makes it way more tolerable and enjoyable if the drink is cold. When i tried drinking it warm a lot of the flavors and burn was overwhelming.

I don't think it's a good sipper as the flavors can get too intense but it's great for what it's meant to be.

Had a rum tasting on a sunny afternoon, because why not. Koloa Kaua'i Spice Rum bottle and label design looks very nice and artsy. Very light amber color. There is plenty of unmatured alcohol to the nose and palate with an overload of sweetness and vanilla. Strong burn at the end, it's simply too hot at 88 Proof. Mix it with your favorite soda and down it goes. Not a neat sipper.

Nose is like a and w cream soda. Taste is a little sweet like vanilla icing with hint of spice. I GEt clove and similar spices. I would give this 6.5. Simple flavor but decent for a mixer.

This is a very sweet rum, but also with a kick of added spiciness. A little overly sweet in the end, but can be sipped in a bind. Slightly higher abv than other rums as well, but I am not sure this compensates for the sticky sweetness.

Perhaps it is just me but the first thing I smelled was clove and I am NOT a big clove fan. Tasting it revealed my nose was correct...definitely cloves. Not what I would care for in a spiced rum but others might. I did detect some nuttiness and a bit of vanilla and cinnamon. After the burn faded (this has a slightly higher alcohol content at 88 proof) the nuttiness was slightly more pronounced along with the sweetness. Definitely will warm the cockles of your heart...maybe even the subcockles. Definitely not a sipper but a good rum for hot mixed drinks on cold days...especially hot toddy's, hot buttered rums, and maybe a mulled cider.

You can taste the spices but its not over powering. Nice aroma and smooth finish. Better then any other spiced rum I have had except the Kracken and you can't really compare it to the Kracken. It would be like comparing a lite rum to a dark rum. I recommend you try this one.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I found the sweetness overpowering the actual spice component which was far too subtle for my taste. In several cocktail recipes, I found myself having to add additional falernum, allspice dram or bitters, depending on the drink.

Very sweet! Not a very complex rum. Very notable sweet vanilla icing and the spice is a subtitle clove undertone. Interestingly sweet but a very average rum. Comparable to sailor Jerry but sweeter. Did I mention how sugary sweet this is!

The colour is straw like , the nose is heavy with cloves and vanilla , also caramel and other spices i cant place , maybe cinnamon. First taste is very sweet and strong but not over powering. I also think the 44% helps this rum find its place. Quite enjoyable but would put a few spiced rums in front of it eg , Red Leg and Foursquare for starters.. Probably wouldn't buy again.

Nothing special but good spice rum. Better for mixing than for sipping.

Pretty artificial, but a solid start. With others that equal it out there, can't see this one catching on.

I drink this with cola. Not the best rum I've had but not the worst. It did taste better at the distillers where it is made in Kauai

This is ok. Not really outstanding or bad in any particular area

Sickeningly sweet and very alcoholic. One dimensional artificial vanilla flavor with backdrop of muddled spices. Has a medicinal finish. The longer I wait and reflect, the worse this rum gets. I recall drinking it on a beach late one night and it being very good. I must have had too much. Would not recommend as a sipper. It could be used for mixed drinks, but it is rather pricey. There are much better spiced rums for the price. In fact, I may buy the Kirkland Spiced just to do a side-by-side comparison.

To be avoided. One of the sweetest rums I've ever tasted. It's a shame... I so wanted to like this rum from Kauai, but it seems only their light rum is drinkable. With so many other decent spiced rums widely available, I see little reason to get this one, aside from perhaps sugar or because it reminds you of good times on the garden isle.
Not good for: sipping, mixing
Good for: very sweet desserts
