Cuba | Gold | 40% ABV

Havana Club Añejo Especial is a blend of rums aged for up to five years produced from the fermented molasses of sugar cane harvested in Cuba. The molasses is combined with yeast and water, distilled using column stills, and aged in white oak barrels.

Havana Club was founded in 1878 by Jose Arechabala and later nationalized after the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

The original taste before the 2015 change of recipe (last bottle with original taste I bought 2016) was unmistakable Havana Club with pronounced tobacco and wood in smell, taste and aftertaste. I cannot remember first time I tried this rum, but it must have been some 25 years ago. Some people do not like the bottom HC product line (3y, Especial, 7y) smell, the body, the alcohol burn. Well, I am pretty much used to it after all these years, so was able to sip HC Especial, no problem. Used to make decent Cuba libre. Reedit 06/2021 - I did not realize for how long I actually did not buy this rum - the characteristic tobacco in smell and taste is almost gone, it is sweeter and smoother than the original, but also less distinctive in taste. The original would score 7, but this is rather 6. Still a decent mixer and a good value for the money. It lost most of its sentimental value for me though, as this is one of the first rums I have ever tasted.

I have tested this one both in drinks ans straight, but prefer it in different drinks. I must say that it works straight also.

Not a favorite on ice or straight but the perfect rum for Cuba Libre.

Not at smooth as the 3 year, but still a great rum! Nice sweetness on the nose with a strong molasses. Some more slight citrus. Truly a great rum for all around purposes!

This is my go to for corn and oil now and other mixer drinks. It can be sipped but don’t see the point when I have far over ones on the shelf! Duty free always has this on offer so really good value for money.

Good rum which is readily available where I live at a reasonable price.
Taste is good, quality as well.

Not as good as the Havana Club 7 años but for variety's sake, I enjoy this one. It's a bit on the lighter side. It runs down smoothly.

Smooth mouth feel with medium throat burn. Sweetness is fine. Flavors of vanilla sugar and walnut. Doesn't carry much complexity. Somewhat peppery and bitter finish.
