Gosling's Family Reserve Old rum is crafted in Bermuda from the same blend as Gosling Black Seal but is aged longer in dark barrels. Each bottle is hand-labelled and numbered.
Fantastic package from Bermuda’s only rum company.
It’s very dark and the aroma is very complex with its Christmas spices, caramel and some oak. The taste is a little sharp and a lot like the aroma plus some plums, I believe.
Prior to my tasting event I have herd about this one and was very curious to taste. I asked the sommelier to add this to my tasting list for my event. It would nice to have 1/2 points because it would get a 7.5 The nose notes were creamy vanilla and a little savory- 8 points and on the mouth it was smooth and soft for 7 points.
Definitely a very unique rum - but for me not in a good way. I don't mind so much it's dark color but the taste reminds me of a bitte liquer. Obviously it is not quite there yet but it goes in the direction of a Kümmerling. I don't taste anything sweet in it, even after a while it is in the glass.
Unique quality presentation. Deep mahogany colour. Smells of leather, tobacco and barrel. Some alcohol burn making it not too smooth. A long finish with burnt sugar and spicey flavours.
Fresh brew black tea with scent of think dark cacao liquer. Steamed banana leafs wrapped with fresh coconut flesh. Woody and jammy.
Woody, toasty with black tea tannin on palate. Sweetness of unripe banana with tart bite and dried fruits such as apricots follow with mild tobacco leafs.
Woody and herbicious finishing with dried raisins and pear. Pleasant and flavourful yet not too sweet.
Un rhum comme je les aime. Pas trop sur l'alcool. Belle robe
I tried this as one sample neat in a well stocked bar. Wise decision! As usual with Gosling's, there is a heavy molasses flavor. There is also a burn on the tongue, but with no after taste. I could not wait for this shot to be finished so that I could move onto my second rum out of three trials. It is definitely not worth the hefty price tag of $70 per bottle or $15 per shot.. With each sip, my rating just kept going down from it's initial one of 6.
To begin, and as you should know that everything enters through the eyes; so i have to say that the presentation of this rum is magnificent, the bottle used in cellars sealed with sera and the wooden box stuffed with straw, i thought it was a very wise choice. Then speaking of the smell i can say that it is a little intense, feeling vanilla, wood and chocolate more marked; when tasting it you can realize that it is a soft rum, without alcoholic punch, with vanilla flavor, dark chocolate and to a lesser extent wood and tobacco. I think it's a great rum, and without doubt has 9 points out of 10.
Gefiel mir sehr!
This is a blend of rums distilled in cognac and grappa (italian pomace brandy) pot stills. Each bottle is coated with black wax seal and numbered. In the glass it has a rich velvety dark maroon colour. Aroma comes in with an initial bouquet of apricots, peaches, and raisins, developing into heavy fruitcake and maple. In the mouth it is sweet with hints of caramel, dates and maple in the back of the tongue, and very smooth with almost no burn. Pleasantly surprised and highly recommended!
Very nice on ice..havent had Goslings in years. My father-in law gifted me this special bottle.
Goslings family reserve old rum bouteille 5081/17
Origine : Bermudes
Nez : fruité sur les fruits exotiques (banane et mangue)
Bouche : goût de caramel avec les épices du gosling black seal.petit goût médicinal.
Initial smell is nice with sweet aroma but initial flavor misses but almost a second later you get a smooth, warming sensation of caramel sweetness that is enjoyable. Cool numbered bottle in cool case.
Has a rounded sweet almost caramel taste on the front of the tongue, and a slight oaky taste at the back. Goes down smooth as water, no burn to speak of. If it wasn't for the price I could easily consume half a bottle of this in an evening as it's so easy to drink. Fantastic.
Tried the Gosling's Black Seal and Family Reserve back-to-back and I was very surprised how big the difference is between these two rums. The Family Reserve tastes like a proper aged dark rum. It reminds me quite a lot about the El Dorado 12 year old rum in flavor profile. There is a hint of raisin flavor to bring in just a bit of sweetness, but overall the Family Reserve is very dry rum.
This is RICH!! Whoever said the aroma fills a whole room, they're not kidding! It's powerful and just keeps coming! Carries heavy notes of molasses (duh), but underneath there's some tobacco, fresh bread and cinnamon. Smooth and friendly as you drink it, which definitely isn't something I can say for most other blackstraps. Palate again gives you that big ol' molasses taste (shocker), but it carries basically everything underneath it. When I say everything, I mean marshmallow, coffee, woodsmoke, cinnamon, something metallic, and some apple as well. The finish then comes in, not too strong, but is curiously oily and tangy at the same time. I'm doing my best to describe it, but I know I'm not doing a good job... You really can't imagine what this rum is like until you try it. (That means go try it!!)
Tasted it in a restaurant after the meal. Liked it. Colour cherry-like and some "fruit" to it (lightly). Spicy and smooth as a good old rhum. Nothing outstanding however.
Got this at Duty Free in Bahamas and glad I picked it up. Very smooth with a great sugar aroma. Notes of dried fruits (raisins & dates), with hints of chocolate.
Love the bottle presentation (wax seal) and wood box.
I read the reviews here and gave it time to breathe.....well, the second glass I did!!
Initially as soon as I opened the bottle, I got a bit of pear drops and bananas on the nose coupled with spice, caramel and oak. This was carried through to the pallet where the caramel took on more burnt notes. Very smooth and well integrated attack from the alcohol, giving a good depth and length. Very good. After breathing in the glass, the pear drops disappear off the nose. There is a mix of spice, wood, caramel. This is carried through on the palate where the alcohol gives a firm but gentle kick. A lovely long warming finish.
For all the good packaging (even if I am not a fan of the black bottle) this is too expensive.
I started with a sample. Towards sweet, a prune and raisin xmas cake, vanilla flavours with a light oaky after-aroma. Hardly any alcohol burn and does seem to benefit from a short rest in the glass. Slightly sweetened.
This is hands down one of the most unique, full bodied rums I've had. It's a sticky, dark pour, and has a very potent nose full of aromatics. Starts off with cocao, molasses, smoke, and Oak. Finishes with a bit of a spicy cocao. Wonderful rum.
