The James Gosling family business first produced Gosling Black Seal rum in 1806, and it is now the oldest surviving business on the island of Burmuda.
Gosling 'Black Seal' rum received it's name from the black wax originally used to seal the bottles. It is Bermuda's most widely exported product and considered the nation's national drink.

The bottle is quite boring with a plastic screw cap and a funny seal (the animal) on it.
A very dark rum with spicy scents.
The taste is sweet, with coffee, caramel and molasses flavours, yet crisp and alcoholic. Thus, Gosling's Black Seal Rum is great in a Dark n Stormy, which is actually a trademark of Gosling's. However the rum could also be sipped, maybe with some ice to soften the crisp taste.
For me it’s not a sipping rum but great in cocktails especially the traditional Dark n Stormy.
I had a gift voucher for a big amount and this rum was taken as i wouldn't get a refund for the unused amount ;-) I was pretty surprised, this rum is really great for its price! I can't wait to try it in a dark&stormy, but even to sip it is quite enjoyable and pretty good compared to other rums in the same price range...
Not too sweet, there is a little bitterness, only a descent smell of ethanol... Of course not compared with more expensive rums like QRM, Opthimus and co...
I've been enjoying Black Seal for some years. As with most I first had in a Dark and Stormy, but it's so much more!
I find it's a great mixing rum to blend with other rums in exotic cocktails to create some complexity and a nice depth of rum flavor. Pleasing smooth aroma of sweet molasses and caramel, some alcohol and vanilla as well. Nice flavor of molasses with hints of vanilla and caramel. Not hot but pleasantly warm. Smooth medium finish lingers nicely. A really good rum at a price that's hard to argue with.
This is a highly recommended rum to those that enjoy experimenting with different rum blends and for trying a different rum in mixed cocktails that you've always enjoyed but that you may be looking for a little tweak to.
I also enjoy pouring a couple of ounces in a snifter and sipping neat once in a while. It's a pleasant rum with plenty of flavor to enjoy and smooth on the palate. It's not a world class sipper but it is an all around good rum that's agreeable to many uses. Not an 8 but better than a 7 in my mind, I give it a solid 7.5. Enjoy!
Lovely dark colour and herbal aroma. Spicey with tons of molasses. Not bad to sip but for me its best with Bundaberg ginger beer , a proper "Dark'n'Stormy" . Not bad also with cola , a different type of rum for me and an enjoyable one !
Strong molasses flavor, pleasant aroma.
As many others have said, this is THE rum for making a good Dark and Stormy cocktail. It is not particularly a sipping rum, but is excellent for the special purpose of Dark and Stormy making (or, for that matter, for dousing fruitcake that is being aged). Well worth adding to your collection for variety.
This is a darn good value for money rum. It smells very unique from other rums. A definite molasses is there. Drinking it straight is ok. Not super knock your socks off complex. But it can be enjoyed straight. What is so darn good about this rum is it makes a great rum and coke. Like goodness gracious this puts kraken to shame. I'm not a big black rum drinker but this will definitely be my go to bottle and at 16$ a bottle the price cant be beat.
'well balanced and nuanced with butterscotch, vanilla and caramel'
"Goslings Black Seal rum review by The Ultimate Rum Guide"
The nose is very pungent. Heavy thick treacly molasses and sweet caramel.
"It’s initially sweet like liquorice, there is a little heat and spice in the mix and the finish is long and slightly bitter."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Nice balance of sweet, funk, and molasses. Although this is not supposed to be a spiced rum, it could pass for a very good one. My favorite mixing rum.
