Smooth and tasty, but not a ton of flavor. Light nose and overall light feel but easy sipper.

Un petit arrière goût de banane.

That was the start of my love with these spirits, rich, tasty

I enjoy this with a lime on the rocks. It does have a whiskey feel, so a rum purist may not like this one.

A smooth, warm rum. This is one of my new favorites due to its very easy drinkable tone. It lacks and heavy alcohol taste and almost no negative after taste or burn. It's sweet but not overly so.

Nice reddish mahogany in color. Oak, cherry, nuts on the nose, little on the sweet side of them. My palate in really liking this one: soft cigar, oak, sweet cherry, alcohol taste is really likable. Various notes linger long time. Tasted this in room temperature and I would say, no for ice cubes. This goes well in tastings, conversations and even as a desert with creamcoffee on the side.

Tonight’s Rum, Ron Barceló Onyx from the Dominican Republic. Another selection from the BC Liquor Spirits sale. So disappointed BC gets so few decent Rums… Anyhow, since my first visit to DR I’ve seen their Rums get better and better. Onyx Hopefully this one will shine. Let’s get to it!

In the glass, this Rum the Onyx is dark, like a well aged Rum. Honey tempered, copper brown, or mahogany. It looks welcoming. The nose is what I would say is true Rum, no artificial or off putting odors. I get caramelized orange and vanilla with a hint of coconut. I like it.

The first hit is easy, but dryer than one might expect, but even though I prefer a sweeter Rum, I’m okay with it. Flavours are subtle with nothing standing out. I get orange, but beyond there I find it hard to break down… If pushed, I’d say flavours include, brown sugar, orange peel, pepper, and a shadow of honey. Honey flavour, but not sweetness. It’s a Rum full of complexity.

In the throat it’s got a significant warmth to it. It lingers far longer than most Rums and in the mouth, the pepper lasts well after you push it down. You will notice this Rum after the first sip.

Overall, it’s decent Rum, but loses points, not necessarily if you like dry Rums, for being dry like a Lowland Scotch. Some may rate it higher. Oddly though, I do find myself looking for another sip.

I’ll give this Rum a high 7, pushing 8/10, solely because of the dryness. I would say, best served neat. #364 of my 500 Rum Goal. I keep thinking I need to go to Barbados to add 50 or so to my list, including St. Nicholas Abbey 18 which is highlighted in my Rum centric novel.

Nose: shy (especially compared to the regular Imperial), some sweet caramel and some wood. Maybe a hint of cherry.
Palate: dry, mild, smooth, with soft hints of wood, but not sweet. Taste lasts long, but is not very voluminous.

Onyx could be good if it aged a bit longer. It's very sharp at the end taking away from what I assume would be a good complex finish.
