Butterscotch. Overripe tangerines. Burning tires and melting plastic. Yep, you guessed it...Caroni.
I love this rum. It's 19 yo, single-barrel, unfiltered and uncolored. Distilled in Trinidad, bottled in Scotland. First, it's been correctly offered at 116 proof (Mezan, are you listening?). The aroma is just mesmerizing: imagine a bakery kitchen full of freshly-made treacle. Now imagine that kitchen on fire due to faulty wiring. That's the smell you want when you nose a Caroni, and this monster gives you all that and more. The flavor is positively perfection. Molasses, brown sugar, sweet citrus...plus acetone and airplane glue. If you've never been lucky enough to enjoy a good Caroni you may think I'm kidding about the solvents, but it's not so. Top-notch Caronis, such as this one, offer a unique rum-tasting experience unlike any other. There are other rums from Trinidad, Angostura being the most popular, but there will never be anything like the rums produced in the now-defunct Caroni sugar factory. Straight up all the way.
