Smooth for the proof and makes the perfect addition to any cocktail
Warning: this is truly a killer. So tasty. So strong. If you taste multiples rums at once, drink it after all others rums as the next one you will taste like lemonade.
Yes it is a real strong beast, but I really like it. Optionally it may serve as an antiseptic if you don't ;-)
This was the first black blended overproof rum I purchased as Plantation rums are staples in my home cocktail bar. I think it is a good representation and the blend has good complexity for cocktails. The names and faces on the bottle give it decent street credibility from the start.
As I am personally less a fan of Jamaican rums than others, especially on this board, for the leather note they contain. That has moved this down my personal list and my current go to is Hamilton 151 which is more just brown sugar. To be fair, the Hamilton is more of a single note than OFTD but I'm okay with that in tiki drinks.
Surprisingly you can drink it straight.. It will bite your nose a bit.. a taste of caramelized almonds and smoked wood.. Definitely not a sipper.
There is lots going on here: sweetness, depth, some spices. It’s great, but I needed to add a little water to really be able to drink it. It is also great as a mixer, and I tried it with ginger ale. This is a bargain.
OFTD stays for old fashioned traditional dark. Tried this one pure, it was served in a ice cold glass. That helped somewhat to put my nose inside. It punches hard but is still drinkable neat (if you are used to casc strengths already). However it is best used for mixing since it is available for 20-25 EUR for 70cl at 69%vol in Germany. Facts: blend of 3 (Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados).
This is a fantastic rum to have on hand to mix if you enjoy the flavor of actual rum(s). A little Jamaica Funk, a little Demerara dark sugar, and strong as hell. Sold in the 1 Liter bottle it is also one of the best rums for the money especially considering the potency and how far you can stretch this rum out. This is a home bar staple for me. I like Lemonhart 151 a little more, but that's comparing two different overproof flavor profiles.
It’s very intense, almost sickly sweet.
"It’s a sweet yet almost bitter, molasses heavy nose."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Great Value......and for an over proof, quite a depth of flavor!

The nose is quite pleasant, not hot like one would expect. Caramel and molasses with warming alcohol. Fruity. The sweet aromas are subdued.
The flavor is a different ballgame! Very warming boarding on hot but low and behold a lot of flavor as well. Sweet molasses, hints of vanilla and oak. Not what I would call a sipper by any means but cut with water or on the rocks it may be considered by some. Not for the faint of heart in this context. Long softly bitter aftertaste that is quite enjoyable.
An excellent mixer when used in cocktails requiring an over proof rum. Plenty of pure rum character but not as hot or lacking in character as other readily available 'big name' over proof or '151' rums. I have yet to experience Hamilton 151 or Lemon Hart but these seem to be the only other over proofs that compare based on reviews.
If you're looking for a great over proof to use in 'tiki' drinks or other rum cocktails this is a great choice as it has great rum flavor and wonderful aromatics. For the price ($27 for a liter in Ohio-2019) it's hard to argue the value. A wholehearted thumbs up!
As an addendum the Plantation website stipulates 16 g/L dosage so it definitely has some sugar added. Not a sugar bomb by any means but I think it actually helps bring out the cursory aromatics that may be lost in the alcohol otherwise. I like the fact that Plantation is transparent in their dosage. It's not deceptive as in the case with other distiller/bottlers.
9/19- I find that like this on it's own more and more. A cube of ice is all it needs if you're looking for something big, bold and full of flavor give this a shot. Still, not for the faint of heart!
