Amazing, how this overproof rum changes characteristics when adding some drops of water. From quite strong with some Jamaican funk over toffee/caramel to more fruity notes. All that for half the price of some “leading brands”…
Very good overproof rum. Full of flavours and aromas. Great choice when the cocktails need it and for shots as well
Smell is nothing special, classic rum. Taste is something else....fruit, caramel and some wood but stay only for second, after that start some warm from throat and nice end.
From overproof rums is this on in the better top. maybe 60-65% will be enough, but still good drink for great price. 8/10
Here was my first review: “Mere words cannot convey what it is like to drink this rum—but I will try. It is an overproof rum, and you’d be hard pressed to miss it. The heat hits you fast, but not unpleasantly; for all that, you still get strong molasses and dark caramel right at the front. Tasty. Once it mellows out a bit, you get into raisins, candied bitter orange peel, coffee, chocolate, and some burnt sugar. On the back end, it leaves your mouth warm and (slightly) dry, with an impression of baking spice. This stuff is entirely too drinkable, and for the price point, maybe the best in its category. One of my favorites to date. Utterly delicious.”
Now the Edit: Learned that Plantation adds some sugar to this, and some of their other rums. I don’t mind, they still taste great, but thought it should be mentioned. May compare this in the future with a similar overproof / navy style to see which I like better (I do love my smith and cross). If you’re not into added sugar, you may want to look elsewhere. Downgraded from a 9 to an 8.
It is fairly delicious and it's amazing you can sip it at 69%. But for me it's mostly a float
Neat, there is a lot of some flavor up front, I can't identify, then it drifts off. Almost a bit of almonds or marzapan, something. It's clean in the end. That is OK but not always what I want to sip, personally. I do think you can get a nice other-level buzz sipping it like with moonshine. Like the chronic, of alcohol.
Can't always identify the flavors and smells, myself. There is some smoke etc. but it's all sort of melted together which is fine. A little tannins maybe, sharp... not extreme.
Not much to add here. It's overproof and it tastes like overproof. Not the "I'm gonna tear your insides"proof, just overproof.
Sec c'est pas forcément top. Mais en cocktail c'est excellent.
Yes, it is strong, but the high alcohol does not mask the amazing bold flavor.
I could describe the nose, the flavor, and the finish, but instead I'll just say this- add 1/2 an oz to almost any cocktail which wants dark rum flavors. Great as a floater, great as a general mixer, just great, and CHEAP. I debated a 10/10 honestly on value alone, but couldn't make myself do it. This is a blend of Jamaican, Bajan and Demerara rums, but I mostly taste the Demerara flavors. If I to build a home bar with only 2 bottles of rum, this would be one of them.
Cork review: 4/10, ACTUAL cork so 1 bonus point for that, but a bit weak. The neck of the bottle is like a 5 year old trying to choke out the adonis that is the cork. *puhhhhh*
It’s very intense, almost sickly sweet.
"It’s a sweet yet almost bitter, molasses heavy nose."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

It's a typical navy strength rum, it's dominated by Demerara with Hampden.
I don't prefer too much Hampden (apple) flavour in navy blends. A similar Rum with the overweight on the Hampden side is Eight Islands.
It's better than kill devil navy style, it was too spicy for me and also better than eight Islands.
For the price it's good if you like navy rums.
The nose is molasses based with Demerara honey and very intensive Hampden apple.
As I said, the Apple from Hampden is very present (it's like a concentrated Smith&Cross Rum in combination with Demerara rum (Pussers).
If you are into sweet or mild rums, avoid it under all circumstances.
I tried to dilute it to 50%. It lost some fruity aromas became milder but was still spicy. It works also with the dilution but the nose got weaker, the taste was still good.
Nose (don't stick your nose to deep, it will bite you): molasses, honey, sour apple, tropical fruits (papaya), some rotten fruits (dunder), oak, burned sugar, barrel and earth
Taste initial: molasses, honey, sour apple (Smith&Cross), dunder (rotten fruits)
Middle: papaya, agave, spiiiiiiiice, earth, dunder, wine
Finish: long as hell, spicy as hell, salted papaya, I already said spiiiiiicy? honey, apple, mint
The balance could be better. Jamaica with Guyana are out of control. I think we need a rum in this blend which reduces the spiciness and not that much Jamaica rum. If you dilute it, the Demerara flavors get too weak and Hampden gets too strong. The spice will be still there.
Sweetness: 2/5
Fruits: 3.5/5
Spice: 5/5
Mildness: 1.5/5
Intensity: 6/5
Value (22€): 4/5
Experience level: expert (if you never tasted a rum under 60% keep your hands off it)
Tried to drink it on ice, I have read a recommendation here. The nose became mild, there is still the apple and some dunder (fermented fruits) with honey and burned sugar (I try to catch some caramel, but it's just an imagination).
Taste is like an unsweetened ice cream first and then the dunder with molasses became more and more intensive, some burned sugar at the end. The cold mouthfeel turns into burning fire. This rum is still spicy.
The bitterness is more intensive because of the cold (wood turns into bitterness, if you cool it). But ice can not kill this rum, this rum is a hot lava that fears no ice.
I think it works also on ice, but I would rather dilute it with water.
