Jamaika, Guyana und Barbados scheinen eine gute Mixtur zu sein,
jedenfalls in diesem Plantation Overproof.
Jamaica, Guyana and Barbados seem to be a good mixture,
at least in this Plantation Over Proof.
A handmade, perfectly made rum is also to be expected with this "Blender team".
A beautiful mahogany in the glass.
In the nose, dark chocolate, dark wood, dark coffee, dark fruits.
On the palate, oh yes, the 69% is an excellent flavor carrier, fiery caramel, fiery vanilla, fiery chocolate, fiery fruits. Very powerful yet pleasant.
In the finish very tasty and with long-lasting subtle sweetness.
May well be enjoyed as pure droplets and looks great in any drink.
I can't sipping this but in a Mia Tia or an old fashion this baby shined.. it has a unique after taste I can't seem to figure out.. pair with artisan 3 star plantation rum and simple sugar with a citrus fruit and a splash of cola it really gets you where you're going.
Beautiful dark amber color. This very round and hot rum with aromas of dried fruit and vanilla is a superb blend created by experts in rum for bartenders for the creation of exotic cocktails. This version at 69% is a beautiful success. If you search for the definition of this acronym O.F.T.D, look at some comments below ;-)
What happens when you take seven rum experts (Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, Martin Cate, Alexandre Gabriel, Paul McFadyen, Paul McGee, Scotty Schuder, and David Wondrich), put them in the same room, grant them access to everything Plantation has available, and ask them to re-invent their Original Dark Overproof? As the legend goes, upon tasting a near-final blend, Wondrich exclaimed, "Oh f***, that's delicious!"—to which the others readily assented. Wanting that to be the name (remember, it had been a long day of rum tasting) but realizing it probably wouldn't fly, they borrowed the acronym and re-applied it to the somewhat redundant "Old Fashioned Traditional Dark".
Fortunately, it's all of those things—old-fashioned, dark, delicious... The nose bursts forth with strong, sweet, creamy butterscotch and brown sugar. (I usually dislike butterscotch, but it's just perfect here.) There's also a hint of baking spices. It hits your tongue at full force, with a pleasant burn.
Most of the rum in this blend hails from Guyana, but is expertly complemented by funky Jamaican and rich pot-still Bajan rums (unlike the Original Dark Overproof, which was Trinidadian). With its great complexity, sweetness, and high-octane kick, OFTD is just begging to be shaken or blended into something tasty. Try subbing it in for recipes that call for overproof, navy-style, or Jamaican rums; you may encounter—as the creators of this masterful blend did—something unexpected and wonderful.
True to Plantation form, the bottle is elegantly presented, with heaps of enjoyable literature adorning the label. (Kudos to Plantation's marketing and design team!)
What amazes me is the value at which Plantation has brought this to market—~$30 for a liter of high-quality, 138-proof booze? What are they drinking?! (Oh, yeah...) Here's to hoping they keep this accessible as a bar mixer for the masses. Like Stiggin's Fancy, I do see this as becoming a mainstay of the Plantation lineup for years to come.
This has become my favorite sipper on ice. I find it doesn’t play nice with others in cocktails, with exception. It does make a mean mai tai, but I like it best over a big fat single ice cube as a pre bedtime treat or after dinner digestif. Also, the story on the bottle gets extra points. Keep on killin it plantation.
Nose not bad for overproof. I put on ice and let it breathe. Not typical gasoline as expected and can be consumed as sipper but not recommended. Had Cuba libre and definitely way to go. It doesn’t have flavor like typical plantation. Overall ok. Prefer something with flavor. If looking for no real bite and extra alcohol mixer this is your drink
Without question this is aimed at the tiki resurgence that has steadily been picking up steam. Really whats not to like about tiki as long as it's not exclusive. Yeah,,,,, well as with anything retro especially those things dealing in specific styles, some folks dive in head first and others see ways to turn a profit. There's no telling to what ends an obsessed time traveler will spend in order to out do their fellow club members. Fortunately everyone benefits from such escapism, at least in this case we all do.
If you love funky estery dunder rum such as Smith and Cross to the point that you consider it a fine sipper, as I, but sometimes wish it had a bit more smoke and more molasses.... this may just get you there. By every account of the marketing jargon it's primary target will have you floating it in a delicious concoction. BUT WAIT! it ain't a bad sipper, though I do get a nagging bit of sacrine in the finish. Not so mach as to be a deal breaker by any means. Really what can you ask for in a 69% abv dark full liter bottle of rum priced at $30? I didn't expect this much so I'm happy.
BTW on the label they have lovingly supplied us with a nose and flavor profile just to the right of the R. Crumb like profile illustrations depicting those involved in this achievement. I'd say they left out a huge dose of black licorice. But hey that just my palate.
Cognac overtones wash through to vanilla, nougat aftertastes. Amazingly smooth, a definite sipper. Worth the cost to a T.
This is a strong manly rum, it is excellent as an addition to any rum and coke and gives you a full mouth flavor of deliciousness. Great Tiki Rum and goes well as an addition to any rum drink for an extra boost.
Strong banana note, and the sweetness is tempered by a ridiculous amount of alcohol. Not bad at all
Great depth. Not as sweet as I was expecting. Would be great in an old fashioned.
Oh Fxxk That's Delicious!
Funky/ hogo flavour of Jamaican rum, chocolate fudge and fruity dried fruits along with cooked banana.
2 drops of water, less funky while it enhance the notes of chocolate fudge, coffee, cloves, raisins and woody in the glass.
Funky sour cherry and chocolate with caramel while sipping. Slight burning sensation due to alcohol but acceptable.
2 drops of water, enhance the flavour of caramel, banana and chocolate. Unsweetened banoffee pie.
End with dry finishing and dried fruits. Length was shorter than expectation yet it does provide balance finishing.
- taste: 69/100
- value for money: 67/100
- score: 68/100
- price: arround 30 eur
I think I will not get myself on this boat again, but that was a nice experience. Pirates would definitily kill for its power and taste, and strong influence on body;)
Final verdict: Maybe some day I will giv it another shot
Nice aroma -must breath in glas longer time. Too strong to enjoy straight. Heating very long time and dry aftertaste.
Strong, yet complex in flavor. It’s interesting and as I finiah the bottle hard to really describe. It mixes really well. It’s rally good overall, but not much of a sipper w/ ice.
Litet alkoholbett.
Ganska kort torr eftersmak. Blir som vanligt inte besviken på Plantation.
Thicker than most rums, stays with you for awhile. Dark, almost chocolately flavor. Medium smooth, full mouth feel.
With some water, it opened up and revealed a nice palet of fruit
Taste like a better version of Pusser's Blue Label.
Plantation O.F.T.D. (which stands for 'Old Fashioned Traditional Dark') is comprised of blend of rums distilled in Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana, which has been bottled at a hefty 69% so get plenty of flavors and then some! Intensily dark color, mediocre bottle design, very strong alcohol smell and taste and what else to expect from a Plantation Overproof.
