Many years ago when I first tried the Flor De Cana rums from Nicaragua, I was so impressed that I had decided to do side by side taste tests for their amber rums of age 4, 7, and 12 years. This 7-year is definitely worth only a few bucks more than the 4-year, but I could not tell the 7-year and 12-year apart at that time. All I concluded was that the 12-year was a rip off, so I rarely ever bought the 7-year again. I have always been impressed by it, but there was still that nagging thought of being duped by marketing on the extra aging.

Now that I am contributing my own rum reviews to this site, I picked up another 7-year bottle of this amber rum. It is smooth with no excessive sweetness and can be used as a budget sipper, served on the rocks, or as a mixer. Not many rums can boast credit for all three. It is basically inoffensive and well worth the fairly low price. It is not the finest sipper, but for the price, you can't beat it.

Now that I can appreciate this rum since it wound up in my top 30 list, most of this bottle still remains after several months. In the old days, the whole bottle would be gone in only a few days. It wound up in third place among my dark rum budget sippers behind El Dorado 8 and Don Q Anejo respectively. After bidding farewell to my first and final bottle of the over rated Mount Gay XO, this Flor De Cana 7 was a welcome pleasant surprise. Sad but true! This one is also much better than the over priced Flor de Cana 18.

Out of all of all of the rums Flor de Cana produces, this is the best one for people who are looking to get into fancier aged rums, and for those who simply want to enjoy an easy drinking, smooth, intricate and non-sweet aged rum. Nice warm brown colour, elegant aromas of molasses and oak, with a hint of vanilla only prevalent on the nose. To the pallet, it's slightly hot, well rounded, and earthy with an overwhelming sense of quality. One of my go to aged rums for the price.

I've yet to try any other Flor de Cana rum, but after hearing some bad remarks about their 5-year, I was pleasantly surprised by the 7-year. It has a deep and complex flavor that makes a great sipping rum, or a mixer with coke. Great aged rum at a lower than average price.

Good value rum. Something is break out for the guests if they wanted something other than captain. Can mix or sip

This is a decent rum but I hoped for better. As my introduction to Flor de Caña, it was good enough to get me to try the 12 year but as an aged rum, I realized I liked Appleton products more. Don't get me wrong, this is good rum, it just wasn't life changing or anything. It's fairly smooth with minimal burn, reasonably sweet, and while it has a decent flavor, it also has a little bite (spice) that I wasn't fond of. Definitely worth a try and well worth the money as it is quite affordable.

Very nice. I expected more of a burn from a 7 yr but was pleasantly surprised. Vanilla/caramel on the nose. Taste has some spice, minimal burn, and some nice molasses undertones. The finish has minimal burn with the same sweetness lingering. I’d like to keep a bottle on hand just in case.

This is easy to drink on ice or mixed. Personally I prefer something more robust for mixing such as a dark or spiced rum, so unsurprisingly I would say it gets a bit lost, but it certainly doesn't taste bad. As a more stand out point, this reminded me of the (less sweet) taste of whiskey, not my thing usually but here it works, and to my friends who prefer whiskeys this is very much their preference from the cabinet.

Good sweetness, a little rough around the edges. Some citrus peel, balanced by vanilla. I bought it to mix but wound up liking it straight.

This rum for me was just okay. In general I didn't get a lot more out of the nose than booziness, with one occasion noting a floral fragrance. The taste was mainly slightly woody with an occasional subtle sweetness / caramel. Overall though, I found this boozy for some reason. It was the most consistent thing I noted through the bottle, both with ice and without. I probably won't buy this particular bottle again with all the other choices out there.

A really enjoyable rum that can be drank on the rocks or with your favorite mix. Hints of honey and dark chocolate but not overly sweet. Highly recommended especially with the reasonable price.

I remain unimpressed by this distillery. I drank this side by side a 7 year old Abuelo. The Abuelo was far superior. This one is thin, no balance or complexity. Harsh with a short acrid finish. Not good.
