When it’s on sale for under $25, worth EVERY penny. Even decent sipper over ice.
There's no doubting the quality of this rum. However, I would say this blend has been designed with eye to encroach on the whiskey market. I think it's been aged in bourbon barrels and that characteristic shows in a pleasing way. I would definitely buy this again, especially as it makes a surprisingly good rum & coke, minus the lime. For sipping on a cold winter's night this is perfect but I can see why it might not fulfil everyones aged rum fantasy.
Highly recommended and the current rating (6.7) seems to reflect preference rather than quality.
This is 2nd Appleton I have tried so of course I have to compare to the rare casks 12 year that I still have left. This 8 year reserve really holds its own against the rare casks. Both have nice deep amber color. Aroma for me was identical. I find that the 12 year rare casks just has a tiny bit more character and depth than the 8 year reserve. But the 8 year was about 30% cheaper. So yeah, the 12 year rare cask is slightly better but for the price the 8 year is a great value.

Acheté au hasard, je lui donne une bonne car sans être exceptionnel on sent qu'il a été bien travaillé. Donne envie d'en goûter un plus âgé.
I could hardly differentiate between this one (8yr old) and the 12yr old. And I love the 12.. The eight is unusually more expensive than the 12yr in my region, I am unsure why, but that explains why I have taken so long to try it.
What a beauty, not as much funk as the 12, but just enough. Lovely depth of flavour and a nice abv to boot giving it balance and a mmmm at the end. Splendid

Love the profile, I’d say more flavorful than the 12. Easy to drink straight. Good to mix. All around great rum. Still get a little hidden Hogo. Orange presence.
Surprisingly spicy on the tongue. Strong notes of black pepper and oaked heat.
"Has a lovely smooth entry which quickly heats up. The initial notes of pineapple and dark almost to ripe banana give way to spicy heat. The flavours linger and coat the taste buds with hot spice."

Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

I guess I'm just not a fan of the Jamaican style of rums. I will never stop trying something new if they get reasonable reviews and ratings, but I have had many better.
