Actually, this 18 year old Flor de Cana is a bit harsher than it's 7 year old younger brother. Why pay a little more than double? Just to get a pretty bottle?

Update one month later: I have tried like hell to like this as a sipping rum, but even letting it breathe in the snifter or the bottle does little to improve the flavors other than to remove the alcohol burn. Save your money and get the best from the Central American Caribbean with Flor De Cana 7.

Update March 9, 2018: Adding ice cubes does nothing to improve this horrible rum. Don't be fooled by the otherwise high ratings. This rum is really crap! Sorry, but I always tell it like it is! I have just lowered my rating from a 6 to a 4. Flor de Cana needs to quit while they are ahead at 7 Anos. Only one other premium rum showed an epic fail for me, which was Mount Gay XO that tumbled from a rating of 8 to a 3.

Update November 10, 2021: Because of my bad experience with this rum, I have held off in buying their 25 Year rum for $145 until today. I also bought two other premium rums in the $100 to $150 US price range to try and find something better than my top ranked rum of Foursquare ECS Shibboleth. I was not expecting any higher rating than a 7 for the FDC 25 Year. However, to my surprise, it scored a perfect 10 and is now my all time top ranked rum that is also fairly easily replaced. I was once told my a salesman that the 18 year and 25 year are two totally different rums, but I had ignored him thinking that it was just a sales pitch. How wrong I was!

This rum is the one I pull out when my friends who proclaim they do not like rum come to visit. It is great to sip straight and has a pleasant aroma. I’ve given a few bottles as gifts and it has become the brand of rum many of my friends prefer.

It's hard to find a well-aged rum without added flavor. I really wish Flor de Cana would stick to an age statement, but this is an excellent rum regardless.

One of my favorite, I enjoy over ice. This is one I keep in my bar.

Note: I'm a sipper. My opinion is based on sipping characteristics.

I can't help but compare Flor de Cañas to El Dorados in a way. For example, both have really great 12-year olds that one should definitely try. But while the 15-year El Dorado feels much more mature than its younger counterpart, I can't say the same about the 18-year Caña. Honestly, I expected much more. Unfortunately it did not deliver. I'm not saying it's not good or actually better than its younger sibling, it just ain't *that* better. A great sipper in a great bottle, a must-try and all but certainly let me down a bit. As much as I wanted to give it an 8, there's another member of the family that gets it quite unexpectedly even for myself.

Was given a bottle of this rum for my birthday from a friend with excellent taste.

I’ve tried other rums from this brand (the 12 and the 4) and this one is by far the best.

I’ve only tasted it neat so far, but it’s quite rich and deep. None of the bad notes I find in the 4 year are apparent here. There’s some nuttiness and some wood. It’s delightfully smooth.

It lacks some of the complexity that I’ve come to appreciate in blended or pot still rum, but this rum is fantastic and is the best column still rum I’ve had the pleasure of trying so far.

This rum is quite complex, naturally sweet and quite strong, too. Might be too harsh for some, but to me, this was a very good sipping, although I enjoyed the rum somewhat more if it was allowed to rest in the glass for 5-10 minutes. Paired a glass or two with food, then another one later with a cigar, it's accompanied both fairly well.

Smooth as a baby's bottom. A truly enjoyable sipping experience. Not harsh, not bitter, no burn. I like it.

I had high expectations, but it was not what I got. Flor de Cana 18y is a bit flat. It's not bad, but pretty average. A nice colour, a nice smell but the taste is not there. Sorry!

Mycket god med tydliga chokladtoner. Inte för ”spritig”
