Als zacapa liefhebber mocht hij niet ontbreken in m'n collectie. Dure maar mooie fles. Jammer dat de extra centjes niet overvloeien in de smaak.

It is more dry than expected. You can feel the alcohol at first sip it sticks. But then it start open up. Try to heat it up in your hands for few minutes, and it then gives its fully potential. Interesting blend and a big applaus to Zacapa Master blender, Lorena Vasquez.

A bit stronger that the basic Zacapa, a very pleasant and balanced taste with full body and a bit of sweetness. The price is very steep but the content is delicious

This best Zacapa for me not only for the price.
Smooth and rich characters with long final 👌

Zacapa Royal consists of rums aged in American whiskey barrels, delicate sherry and fine Pedro Ximénez wines. Their blend is aged in precious barrels made from the wood of the trees of the four French forests called Le Bois du Roy™ (Allier, Nevers, Vosges and Tronçais), which used to belong to the royal family and have been protected since the 13th century, when the King of France himself imposed strict restrictions on logging. These are blends of rums 8-30 years old bottled at 45% ABV.

Bottle: Truly luxurious with a beautiful gold cap packaged in a casket.
Colour: Dark mahogany.

Nose: There's quite a lot of alcohol at first, which surprised me for such an old and luxurious rum. It mellows out after a while, but I recommend to let the rum sit for at least 20 minutes. In the aroma I recognized caramel, raisins, cocoa, coffee, nuts, tobacco and tan oak.
Taste: Dense, creamy and strong. It is a medium sweet rum. The taste is again caramel, vanilla, dark chocolate, pepper and a slight bitterness of oak.
Aftertaste: Long.

Finish: In my opinion, after summing up the aroma and taste, this is a rather snobby affair where the price, in my opinion, does not reflect what you get from this rum. The taste difference between XO and Royal is very small, but the price is 3 times that.
Rating: 9/10

First of all: you need a Glencairn glas for tasting. The nose is much better in this glas.
In a rum tumbler it's not concentrated. And it needs 30min in the glas.
If you drink Zacapas take your time.

Tasted the Royal in comparison with 2019, Aniversario 30 and 2014 edition.
It tastes like the old zacapas. Intensiv, sweet and fruity, with wooden aromas.
It's not as good as the Aniversario 30. The 30 is more mature, more wooden and more fruity in the taste.
It's not as fresh as the XO. XO has a very nice balance between the matured and the young rums.
But Royal is more intensive and heavy.
It starts with caramel, burned sugar and dry fruits. The herbs are less present (same in Zacapa 30). The taste is not as heavy as 30 or Negra, but it's quite elegant. In the middle as it became warm I thought at some point, it's a little bit too sweet. From the sweetness I would say it's at the tip of the iceberg. Then I get some heavy flavours of the toasted cask (wood), but not as much as in the 30th.
I notice also a hint of cherries, this goes in another direction than other Zacapas.
The finish is not very spicy and sweet with caramel, barrel (wood) and dark fruits (not much herbs left).

A elegant and sweet Zacapa but too expensive for me.
2019 is more younger and also heavy, but has more mandarine in the taste. I think it's a good alternative. Buy the 2019 edition now, some years later it will be as expensive as royal I think.
Would rate it with 92 points.

Sweetness: 3.5/5

As all Zacapa's more on the sweet side, but if thats what you are looking for then this is worth of having even with this price.
