Why "surprising"? Because I rate the Zafra 21 an 8 - this is a nice step up.

This is smoother than the 21, and more sophisticated. Smells and tastes of caramel, oak, and honey, with a hint of bourbon, and a nice light spice. I prefer this to the $500 El Dorado 25, which I knocked down to a 9 after tasting this (it was previously at the bottom of my 10's which are getting over-crowded ).

A delicious rum; I recommend this even if you're not a fan of the Zafra 21.

We dont get to rate many actual 30yr old rums that aren't solera's. So I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't rate a 9 or 10. Great dark mahogany colour in the glass , aromas of caramel , stone fruit , honey and wood plus a bit of smoke.
When sipped I tasted sherry , bourbon cask , more honey and some spices.. dry rum so not too much sugar if any ? Lovely spicey warm mouth feel. Long aftertaste with minimal burn.
Very well made and I really enjoyed it but not exceptional for me.

I think the 30 years old rum does not need long comments, especially when it is made by the legend - Don Pancho Fernandez.

Yes it is expensive and limited but if you can afford a bottle and find one I don't think you will regret getting one. I really like the standard Zafra bottling but this one is even better. This is a slow sipper for me.

This is a sweet & decadent rum that is well worth the money. The finish is smooth and long lasting.

I had the 21, but the 30 has been elusive until I saw it in a bar and gave it a try. The rum color was dark mahogany and the nose brought notes of oak, caramel, slight tobacco, and molasses. The palate followed with the same notes, but some unexpected spices made the finish very pleasant.

You literally can't go wrong with this rum. As with all rums from don Pancho's distillery, amazingly silky and smooth with an aftertaste mouth coating of chocolate.
