G+R F LU17

Another treat with the typical fruity style from Barbados.
Beautiful amber in the glass.
In the nose, freshly picked tropical fruit.
On the palate, in vanilla cream dipped caramel bars with spices.
In the finish very discreet but persistent.
Again, as with most single cask rum it takes time and leisure.
More depth than the KD Belize 10-Year

Hunter Laing, the whiskey guy, has bottled some fine rum from Barbardos, specifically the Foursquare distillery. This has been aged for 14 years, bottled in 2015.

Aroma...no trace of alcohol despite being bottled at 92 proof. Light hints of vanilla and molasses.
Taste...green grapes, sweet peppers, oak
Finish...spice, but it dissipates (too) quickly
Verdict...very tasty and easy to drink. Lots of pleasant flavors.

P.S. - Zero additives!

In the glass it’s bright, light brown colour more reminiscent of an amber Rum like Lambs Light Rum. The fragrance from the glass after swirl is of tart pineapple laced with orange and light nutmeg. It might even be called sour if you take in a big, close-up sniff, but not unpleasant.

Instantly beyond the lips a light sweetness is detected and if held for a moment heat develops quickly. The flavours are of caramel, that pineapple detected on the nose and I think cardamom. Might be nutmeg. It does come across like an honest Rum, that is, a Rum not augmented with sugar before being bottled. (there are some Rums like that). It’s slightly dry. The first few hits do come with a peppery heat that diminishes greatly after a few sips. In the throat it does carry that heat down, but it’s warm and soothing, not burning as some harsher spirits do. The finish is long leaving traces of pineapple on the back of the tongue and does continue with heat that lasts 10 or more seconds after swallowing.

Asi nejlepší Foursquare co jsem zatím pil. Hodně mne překvapila sladkost, kterou cítím docela podstatně.

Sugar: 0-5 GPL. The first aroma I got from this rum was apples. You know the smell when you pick up a Granny Smith apple and smell it? I know that's an odd remark but I kept coming back to it as at first it seemed like sweet grass and finally I settled on "apples". My friend tasted green grapes. Moving on, this rum has a pleasant aroma of apples, baking spices like ginger or nutmeg, vanilla and of course oak. It's a smooth rum that has a bit of a bite to it, probably because it's 46% alcohol and not the standard 40%. The burn fades quickly and you are left with a nice warm glow. I was out of town at a rum bar and this rum is not available in Ontario. Any of the Kill Devil rums in the LCBO are $140 and up price range. If this rum was available and in the $80 range then I would buy it. Otherwise you are overpaying.

I think I tasted the 16yo version, but suppose its quite similar. The aroma is pleasant, smoky tones, toffee taste and you enjoy each sip.
