El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum

El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year

YU
had this rum recently

Guyana | Aged | 43% ABV

El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum is crafted from 15 to 25 year old rums that are then blended and married together in bourbon oak casks. Prior to blending the original batches are distilled using 4 unique stills - the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, and the Versailles single wooden pot still.

The bottle of El Dorado Special Reserve 15-year was inspired by the the old hand-blown flasks used by sugar planters on the banks of the Demerara river.

This is superior to the 12 year in my opinion by a decent margin. They are different for sure, but this is much more to my liking. In fact it is almost the opposite of the 12 year. The nose is almost overwhelming with heavy Banana and molasses and just a touch of tobacco. Imagine smelling a jar of concentrated molasses made from banana. If you take too deep of a whiff it is overwhelming. It almost made me worry about the taste...but....nope, it is delicious. The first taste is pure nutmeg and honey. Mid palate the banana returns in full force along with butter, butterscotch, nutmeg, rum cake, honey, and just a hint of fine tobacco. The aftertaste is sour cherry, alcohol, and allspice with banana lingering in the background. The only reason this isn’t a full 9 is that there is a slight lingering sourness that remains that I can’t quite place. The nose and palate to this rum are so powerful and complex that they make sipping this a wonderful experience.

*Update* So the more I drink this rum, the more I enjoy it. Further, despite other reviews, 6 months after having opened the bottle, the originals flavors and notes are still present and the rum has not degraded much despite the reported higher sugar level. Therefore given my increased level of enjoyment and shelf life beyond expectation, I am bumping this rum up a point.

The first thing you notice is its excellent smell that makes you want to taste it right away. In the mouth we have the same flavors that the smell promised you. It’s delicious. It is less refined than the 12 and stronger but it’s difficult to put them into competition, I would say they are complementary. It is rare that I drink one of them without having a glass of the other one as well. The aftertaste is more interesting and longer with this one.

An excellent oak-flavored rum. Many other nuances as well, but I usually notice the dominant flavor first to catagorize it in my head. I actually have an allergy to oak so it makes for a difficult review. After the oak, there's a buttery smoky flavor, very rich, which makes this a serious sipper. I always taste El Dorado the next day after a few drinks, which detracts from my giving it a "clean" finish. But definitely a top-shelf sipping rum.

Complex with notes of coffee, pepper, chocolate and almonds.

I ordered this rum (cannot get it locally) based on a suggestion and I cannot get enough. It is so rich and so smooth. My gut tells me it is the fact that it is Demerara based. Other dark rums that shoot for this same type of flavor (Zaya 12-year, Diplomatico Reserva) get close but just are not as rich tasting.

I have enjoyed this on its own, as a base in a multi-rum cocktail, and it makes an incredible Daiquiri when using Demerara syrup in place of simple syrup.

I have already seen a lot of comments about this El Dorado 15years and I'm not dissappointed.
With this nice amber color, this El Dorado leaves long legs on your glass. The oak aroma is well present at the beginning but if you leave it breathing few minutes, it will then release all his aromas.
I have really enjoyed it.

This rum i really fine. Not so sweet like Diplomatico Grand Reserva and more character. But Diplomatico together with this El Dorado are excellent choice for everybody who starts with premium rum and also for sipping with friends. This rum you cant make a mistake... Everybody likes it!
A beautiful bottle - a replica bottles worn by plantation owners during their inspections :)

very well balanced with brown sugar, vanilla, dry fruit, apricot. Easy to drink. Not enough complex for me but it is a good indicator of what will be 21 years old Version

Not so sweet, so not my top choice. No aftertaste. Very weird...

Nose: Big, deep, full. Bigger than the 12 year old. Cut oak, aniseed, brown sugar, molasses, a bit of engine oil and some tar. A little smoke creeps in, slightly burnt and smoky toffee. Definately related to the 12 year old but beefed up, more brooding and deeper. Complex and murky. Yum.

Palate: Sweet delivery and quite a viscous mouth-feel. A mirror of the nose with aniseed again and black liqcourice, plenty of oak and some char/soot. The savouries are holding the sweets off, just about. Some slightly sour fruits, stone fruit and prunes in juice.

Finish: Medium to long. Spicy and sweet at the same time. The sugar coats your mouth and carries the sweetness to the finish but the oaky spices buzz around your mouth and dry up with that liqcourice and aniseed. Right at the end there are some more lively fruits like pineapples and oranges and a lasting note of leather/tobacco.

Same score as the 12, although I like this better. It's more of a 7.5.
