El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum

El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year

Guyana | Aged | 43% ABV

El Dorado Special Reserve 15-Year rum is crafted from 15 to 25 year old rums that are then blended and married together in bourbon oak casks. Prior to blending the original batches are distilled using 4 unique stills - the Enmore and Diamond Coffey stills, the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, and the Versailles single wooden pot still.

The bottle of El Dorado Special Reserve 15-year was inspired by the the old hand-blown flasks used by sugar planters on the banks of the Demerara river.

I agree with the other reviewers in that this is a very pleasant all around rum, it is different with my moods and rarely disappoints, this El Dorado family is excellent. The 12 year would be my first choice with the 15 being a close second.

Surprising with rich flavour and depht despite a low cost.

....and a good balance between spices, bitter chocolate and the vanilla honey notes with middle long finish.

One of the best rums I've tried, it could be the benchmark for others. Really easy to say good things about it and not do it justice. If you see it try it, it's an excellent choice.

When speaking with my local signature store rep, contemplating either the 15 or the 12, I figured I would try the 15, thinking if it was good, the step down would be acceptable. I did not enjoy the El Dorado as a sipping rum nearly as much as others I have tried, especially at the price point (+/- $10). High alcohol on the palette really blocked the true flavours I have come to expect from this range. Proving to me that going down to the 12 won't happen, it will be a while before I venture up to the 21.
Perhaps a good choice for mixing high end cocktails deserving of an overproof quality (zombie?).

After tasting 12yo I tries this one. But it is sharp and not very good. After letting it breath it is better, but still...

Tried the 12 YO first and liked it a lot.
With the 15 YO I expected another step forward, albeit from a high level.
The resemblance is obvious. But there are slight differences as well. The 12 yo is somewhat more fruity and taste considerably more like oranges. The 15 yo is less fruity but with more vanilla and a touch of sandalwood.
I cannot say which one is better, because they do come from the same stable. They are just different.
You can not go wrong with either one.

Good may be a little better than the 12 but may not be worth the price difference
