Doorly's 8-Year

Nice aged rum on the spiced side. Hint of vanilla and oak, but not as much. Good as a mixer too

A quite typical woody Foursquare rum, it's fresher and younger that the Doorlys XO. The wood is younger and I have banana in the nose.
The orange is not that intensive, the rum is thinner in the taste.
I like it, but XO is stronger in my opinion. It's still a good natural rum for the price, especially if you are a beginner.
It's unsweetened, on Barbados it's not allowed to add sugar.
Would recommend it to beginners, for conaisseurs it's a little bit simple. Therefore 72 points.

Not that hot as others rum at others rums at this age. Quiet nice balance of oak make it nice for sipping.

My second Barbados rum, after the disappointing Plantation 5yo, and I am glad I tried. Operates way above its price-point and has a real classy touch to it. Very dry, fruity and still enough youth left this has some fine oak, a hint of caramel and in the end a little dark chocolate/coffee bitter to it and all perfectly balanced. There is some bourbon (from the barrels) to it but that also blends in harmoniously without fighting the original rum base (as too often in other brands).

I would serve this after a nice dinner to cognac lovers without doubts! I am impressed and pretty sure I will see/drink more from Foursquare in the near future. Wow!

I tested this one side by side in Glencairn glasses neat against Doorly's XO and R.L. Seale 10 year. This one is certainly better than their 12 year because it spent 4 years less aging in oak. The annoying bitter after taste of their 12 year is just not here for their 8 year. As I have stated many times before, 8 years is optimum barrel aging for rums in the tropics. It is only slightly better than Doorly's XO for me.

This is an interesting rum--perhaps not strictly from a taste point of view, but because it's almost (ALMOST!) that universal rum that can either be mixed with or sipped. I found this one much more complex for sipping than Doorly's 5, and slightly more so than the XO. It's an excellent value, and a good one to get people interested in rum. It makes a good Old Fashioned to boot and an awesome Mojito. However, it tastes bitter in Coke. It's a decent entry-level sipping rum, and one I may consider buying again, but I think Havana Club 7 and Appleton 12 are still the tops for universal rums.

It was a bit of a rough transition for me to go from the heavy, complex, and sometimes challenging Jamaican rums that are my mainstay, into this comparatively crisp Bajan 8 year. At first, I thought there was too little going on. Now I'm at the end of my bottle, and I'm glad I waited to write my review.

The drink is lightly fruity without being sweet, oaky without being bitter, with vanilla to carry you through, enough alcohol on the nose and palate to let you know you're alive, and a gentle, nearly whiskey-like finish, which imparts a sort of buttery-ness when mixed with the right fruit juice.

Overall, nothing here will floor you, but it's a well composed, reserved drink that still has its own character. Were it not for the fact that the alcoholic bite may be a smidge on the heavy side, and the fact that the Bajan style just isn't immensely to my taste, this would easily get an 8 or maybe even more.

Initially I had given this a lower rating, but the more that i sampe it, the more that I have been enjoying the oaky flavor. Note they have a new bottle for the 8.

This new release from Doorly's (a Foursquare brand) is fanstastic. A moderately sweet and very smooth Bajan rum, it's well-rounded enough for sipping, but inexpensive enough to be used liberally as a mixer. I liken this to the comparably-priced (and equally undervalued) Plantation Barbados 5-Year; they are somewhat similar. At only 5 years, Plantation's offering is impressive in its youth, but is more vanilla-forward and far sweeter, which I actually don't love. As with all Foursquare offerings, Doorly's rums are crafted by Mr. Seale without the use of additives or sweeteners, making the end result all the more impressive.

I'm really impressed with this, my first, Doorly's rum; I only wish I knew of a nearby retailer who carried it!
