I picked up a bottle of this today to add to my mixer rums, which will keep me from drinking too much of the more expensive rums in my cabinet. Again, fellow reviewers on Rum Ratings led me to a good purchase decision. I also had no idea that it could also be used as a neat sipper. It's older brother at 12 years old is only about 9 dollars more, but this one is cheap enough to not feel guilty about drinking too much and using it as a mixer. I would choose to sip it neat or on the rocks.

The aroma is like perfume and the taste is of complex spices from the southern Caribbean mixed with some vanilla. Super smooth with no bite and definitely semi-dry with only 14 gpl of added sugar.. It is really quite unique and I can now see where it's older brothers get their DNA from. What a pleasant and affordable surprise!

Update December 23, 2018: Less than a half bottle remains after 2 months and it still tastes rich and as great as the day that I first opened it. I attribute this long shelf life due to it being semi-dry and still having only a half bottle of air to oxidize it. It's older brothers could never make this claim because the flavors would change for the worse after only two months due to excessive added sugar.

Good enough to sip, but also shines in cocktails. Nose of alcohol and brown sugar. Tasting notes of brown sugar, molasses, vanilla and toasted oak. A great value at less than $20 a bottle.

I can sip it forever but I get the slightly extra amount of chocolate & whisky like flavors as too much.
Definitely a high level rum though.
For certain tiki drinks, it’s the ish

On the nose I get notes of treacle from this 8 year old El Dorado Rum, which inevitability makes my mind think of Christmas Pudding. Drank neat, the sweet fruity flavour of this rum is clearly evident, because that’s immediately what you experience on your palate. However, although this rum is sugary, which I love in all rums, (got a sweet tooth what can I say) it’s a thumbs down from me, for three reasons. Firstly, the burn is very harsh. Secondly, it tastes like Christmas Pudding which I can’t stand! And finally, there is zero taste in the finish. In El Dorado’s defence, it does mix well with full fat Coca-Cola and improves some what. But even with the dark fizzy pop coming to its aid, this rum still ends up tasting smoky and heavy with a very strange aftertaste. In that regards, I feel it’s very similar to the entry level offering from Don papa.

Fantastic mixer. The best ginger beer and rum cocktail I have ever had.

Tasted at Laka Lono on 7/2/19. Delightful aroma of molasses and honey. a slight upfront bite on the palate that smooths out with sweet maple and has a whopping sweet finish. Big banana sweetness with some bourbon notes. Not as good as the 12 year.
