Thanks so much for submitting a report. It has been emailed to the Rum Captain and will be actioned shortly.
El Dorado 8-year is a medium-bodied premium rum which has been recently added to the El Dorado portfolio. Distilled from fermented molasses, it is a nice option between the heavier 12-year and lighter 5-year counterparts.
Light mahogany color. The nose is very sweet, on caramel, coffee, butterscotch. Alcohol is present, not well integrated. In the mouth, it is pastry but very flat and short. a rum to discover the world of rum
Nose: traditional el dorado, chocolate, dark sweet molasses, toffee
Taste: chocolate, toffee, hint of smoke, vanilla and baking spice, not as cloyingly sweet as the 12 yo which is a great thing
Finish: semi sweet sugary smoothiness with a perfect amount of oak, ends with dark chocolate. Not as smooth as the 12 yo but that is a good thing since the 12 yo is syrupy smooth because the added boatload of sugar. This 8 yo has just the right amount of kick and spiciness.
Overall: I like this rum quite a lot, it has most of the good qualities of the 12 yo except the excess sugar, this still has some sugar im sure but not too much like the 12 yo.
Mixability is slightly better in the 12 yo since its bit heavier in profile but overall I would still pick this rum over the 12 yo (price is also lower).
Smooth caramel and molasses aroma, sweetness and alcohol. Hints of smoky character. Sweetness upfront but dries through the middle and in the finish. Warming alcohol as well but not harsh or medicinal. Nice warmth and light fruity character as well as a bit of smoky character. Molasses and toffee. Nice medium body, warming and smooth. This is a nice surprise for an 8 year. According to some sources about 8 g/l of added sugar so nowhere near the 12 year. Nice rum flavor. Easy sipper and will be nice in cocktails. Good value in my book. If you don't like it bone dry or overly sweet this is a good choice. A solid 7+ in my book.
Again this is one of the rums I didn't mark as the first entry in my 2nd passport. that is on of the issues with tasting rums in one of the best rum clubs is sometimes you don't remember to do things. i will have to go back and rate it again.
Same at the 5 years. A little sweeter. The molasses flavor starts to come through. Still the alcool burn. Go for the 12 or 15 if you wanna sip it. Better yet. Kirk and sweeney !
Not a bad rum in itself at all but overshadowed by the 12/15/21.
At first it has quite a sharp alcohol so it needs to sit for a while to develop the taste and aroma. Afterwards it has a nice wooden aroma, quite sweet but you can still sense the alcohol strength in it.
The best rum for the price. I love to sip this neat but it works great on the rocks and in mixed drinks aswell
I think, this is one of the good rum in the El Dorado series.
Of couse, 12 years and 15years are tasty rum, however, this 8years have different nice taste.
Suger cane, brown suger flover is stronger than old brothers.
For me, this is as good as 15 years.
I snagged a bottle of this as it was only $3 more than the 5 year, and it was noticeably better, though not extremely so. A solid cocktail/everyday rum.
Solid rum. Nice on its own, but it’s probably worth dropping a few quid more to get the 12 or 15 if that’s what you’re after. A with ice kind of rum.
Un rhum à l'excellent rapport qualité prix.
Se rapproche d'un rhum agricole antillais
I love drinking this rum on the rocks. It has a delightful taste and has so much of the fruity complexity of the 12 and 15 but simply not that sweet. It is a great day to day sipper because of the hearty flavour and the friendly price. Obviously it is fantastic in mixed drinks as well, particularly fond of it in a Rum Manhattan with Lillet Rose and orange bitters.
Jak za tę cenę na prawdę poprawny rum. Fajny ciemnawy kolor. Lekko słodki, troszkę ostry, czuć melasę, lekko wyczuwalna kawa... trzeba docenić cena/jakość.
Works very well as a sipper. Fruity flavours, cinnamon, cardamom and a little bit of earthy notes. Very flavourful and quite fruity on the nose. I could easily sip this neat or on the rocks.
The 8 year is almost on par with Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva, yet not quite as sweet and figgy flavored. A truly versatile demerara, this adds great punch and flavor to cocktails and is fine for sipping. No harsh alcoholic burn or lingering effects, this one likes to linger just enough to be enjoyed for its attributes.
I was surprised by this El Dorado, it's quite smooth and has no afterburner, you can sip and enjoy it. I don't think it's better than the 12 year.
Smooth with a bit of a spicy bite. One of my favourite taste. My wife doesn't prefer rum, but she likes this.
This is where I call quits on the El Dorado. Anything after this is to sweet and has a coffee type taste. Plus the price doesn't justify.
I drink all rum neat. Good or bad so none of my ratings are based on any type of"mixability".
The 8 year is a great chugging rum. I hit this from the bottle. Don't waste your time with a glass.
For the money, you can’t complain. After initial bite comes tasty sweet flavour I wouldn’t say it’s smooth but definitely not bad, not bad at all. Bargain sipper and excellent mixing rum.
Excellent for the price. Good enough to sip, will enhance your drinks.
The 12 yo stays my favorite regular sipping rhum.
Oproti 12y verzi je osmička neuhlazená, ostrá, dřevitá. Není to taková šílená lakovost jako u Brugalu, ale jde znát kratší doba zrání. Nicméně chutnal, ale 12y je jistota sázky na správného koně.
Tastes too much like whisky to me, too much oak. Better off drinking Rye.
The 8 year is not as smooth as the 12 year but it has similar flavours. It is a demerara rum with molasses flavoring which gives it a heavier feel. I like it with a splash of cola, which causes this rum to froth up.
