Wasn't sure if I should give this one a 7 or an 8. Wish they'd allow 'tweeners. Anyhow, the overall score of 7.5 is really just right. I chose 8 because it's a legitimately sophisticated rum worthy of the Zacapa name. I just think that, as the title I gave this review indicates, the compromise between classic sweet rum and bold whiskey-edged rum (of which I am quite fond, esp. the original Mount Gay XO) leaves me personally feeling like this rum does neither extremely well, though it's still pleasing enough. And being far more affordable than the Zacapa XO, it's definitely good VFM (another reason to lean 8-ward). Also, I would be remiss if I did not point out that I just opened the bottle now, for it could well be that in a few weeks or months, I'll be updating this review with a glowing report about how the flavors converged and developed into a heavenly blend. Here's hoping!
Príjemný rum so silným záverom ( 43 % je cítiť ), s mierne korenistou chuťou.
I received this as a Christmas gift last year and finished the bottle recently. I found it to be a very good sipping rum with strong flavours that appealed to my taste. I agree it's a smokier taste profile than the other Zacapa rums but it is a special edition that perhaps is meant to be different. Pricey in Canada but I would buy another bottle.
Toque ahumado muy elegante. Dulce equilibrado. Fantástico.
I had wanted to know the difference between Etiqueta Negra, which i often buy and love, and Edicion Negra. Why the extra money? They are very similiar in taste, but they are slightly distinct too. I would say the latter was a little more mellow and smokey. It has that smoothness that Eitqueta has, but its even smoother. They are both excellent, but i would say the Edicion Negra is the better of the two, for my own tastes. Enjoy
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Nose: nice scent of oak and some smoke. More intense than the Zacapa XO
Palate: very woody and a bit smoky, some chocolate too. Aromatic, some interesting roughness, full, long lasting taste.
Probably the most ‚barrique‘ rum I‘ve tasted so far. But also some unnecessary harshness. A bit more interresting than the Zacapa XO.
As others stated before: edition negra is not the same as etiqueta negra. I‘ve tasted etiqueta negra a few years ago, but, unfortunately, took no notes. So, no real comparsion possible for me.
I got the chance to buy my bottle of edition negra in a duty-free area. There, the price was okay, but the regular price is way too high. You can find lower-priced rums with even more complex and amazing aromes. Diageo is trying to beat the maximum out of the well known brand Zacapa. 35% cheaper would be the right place in the scale.
