Appleton Estate 12-Year Rum is a blend of several rums aged between 12 and 18 years in American oak barrels after being distilled using small-batch copper pot stills.
The rum is produced on the Appleton Estate, which sits in the Nassau Valley in Jamaica. The estate’s origins date back as far as 1655 when the English overthrew the Spanish to rule the island and Frances Dickinson, grandfather of the distillery’s founders, received the land as a reward for his role in the overthrow.
I bought this rum after reviews from this site. Appleton Estate 12 yo disappointed me. A very spicy, woody taste and in taste is predominant alcohol. More like whiskey than rum.
Went the factory in Jamaica. Neat process. Not a real fan of it. Will drink in a pinch.
Nice, smooth taste; smells amazing. Definitely worth the money.
I was surprised how god this is looping at the price range it is in.
At the first sip it seems very strong but that fades away in the mouth.
This rum has a very nice and long aftertaste in the mouth and troath with notes of oak, caramel, banana and a lot of other notes.
After a couple of sips you find out how smooth this rum actualy is when you roll it around in your mouth.
It's very well blended and it's almost it each sip reveals more notes in this rum.
I think more for tasting neat, than mixing, though mixes extraordinarily well. The regular Appleton is good, yet a working man's version of the 12 year, which is a compliment to both.
I've heard some good things about appleton estate and for me it was a good taste but a bit on the strong side. I like my rum to be smooth with some hints of vanilla and this one doesn't have that. It's good to put in coke to get a rum bite at the end.
Not as nice as expected, lots of contradictions. The more I drink it, the less I like it. The smell is interesting but not really nice, the taste too is intereseting but far to strong alcohol taste. Can't believe it is a 12yo. Would not buy it again for sure. Its so strong I think my car could use it if I run out of fuel.
Let the rum rest a while in the glass before you start drinking it.
The nose has a distinct vanilla and hints of citrus on the top. I dug deeper and found brown sugar and oaky smoke.
The taste is even more initial brown sugar and a deep oak feel to it, but without being overly sweet. After a while a warm sensation from alcohol. In the end of the tail I find... drumroll.. molasses. I like it, a lot.
A perfect sipper rum of a classic origin.
Went to Jamaica and found this treat at an all-inclusive hotel. Great drink. can tell the difference between the 12 vs. their basic rum. Wouldn't want a drink without the 12 label or above.
Really great rum. Appleton family is my personal favor and so far 12 y is best. I have´t taste older ones... yet.
Alkohol: 43 %
A je to aroma opravdu příjemné. (87 b)
Chuť: Suchá chuť, dřevitěhořkočokoládová, hřebíček. Beze stopy po sladkosti. (77 b)
Shrnutí: Měl jsem vzorek od kamaráda. Vůně je tedy výborná, ovšem chuťově mě tento Appleton vůbec nazaujal.
Got tired of the sweetness (added sugar) of the El Dorado 12YO rum and switched for this one. It has character, rich and complex, nice aftertaste. Puts lower-end Appleton's (VX, 8YO) to shame.
It fills your nose with a full bodied, slightly oaky but smooth sensation. The first sip is quite powerfull and spicy, with a dominans of oak flavour. After futher sipping the rums complexity is unraveled. Your also treated with a subtle sweet vanilla, a hint of orange and a charred smokeyness. Not bad and quite interesting if your in the mood for something a bit more manly than your average rum.
One of my favorite aged rums for mixing tiki drinks. Very smooth, not too sweet, good amount of that trademark Jamaican pot still funk. Highly recommended.
Aged does make a difference with Rums aged in used whiskey barrels. Younger rum aged in used barrels have to much whiskey flavor carrying over for my taste.
Although this rum is often overlooked it is a stand alone flavour deliverer. It has something that other rums do not I can't tell you what but it has it. I am a fan of Jamaican rums and this is a very good reason why. Great price, not greedy at all. I agree with JaygoZ that it would be a great entry level rum but is also a rum for the more experienced drunks that like to have a comprehensive collection.
I think this is one of my favourite 'entry level' rums. Probs pick this up for about 15 quid n wont find much better in the same price bracket. Would happily sip a shot from the fridge but at the same time wouldnt feel bad about making a cuba libre with it aswell ;-)
12 ans étant le rhum le plus jeune. L'assemblage contient des rhums allant jusque 18 ans.
Assez gras mais de belle teneur quand même.
A découvrir pour les néophytes des rums anglais comme moi !
This is my got-to for rum drinking neat. I've never had a single person complain when enjoying some of my Appleton 12-year. This stuff is smooth and best enjoyed neat.
I found this to be somewhat harsh with a strong burn. It was reasonably tasty, but I don’t think I will buy another bottle.
Smells okay, taste okay but i’m missing a bit of sweetness
When you are a rum connoisseur, it can be really hard to find good quality rums at your average bar or pub. A lot of places keep high quality single malts and premium ryes, but only pedestrian rums. I found Appleton the other day at a bar in my city. I keep a more favorite rum at my home, but that bar found a new customer who will return, because of the Appleton for sale there. If you spot it on the backbar shelves at a commercial establishment... TRY IT!
