Guyana | Aged

El Dorado 21 is produced near the equator in Guyana by Demerara distillery. The final product is a blend of rums, aged between 21 and 25 years and crafted using 100% locally sourced Demerara sugar. I didn't think I'd come across a bottle of this considering how limited the selections in the regional liquor stores are. However one store had this behind the counter on the top shelf and I had enough cash on hand to get a bottle.

After sitting unopened for a couple of months I decided to uncork it and have a sample. The aroma of this rum can be best described by the word "decadent". Definitely a vanilla aroma. The flavor is sweet with molasses, vanilla, caramel, and oak tones to it. Kind of spicy, too. A bit of a tongue-tingler as a result. It has a bit of a burn to it which fades rather rapidly. Definitely a sipping rum and one I recommend for special occasions. Like Saturday.

On another review I wrote:
"Personally speaking I cannot give any rum a 10 because I do not believe a perfect rum exists. The late great Vince Lombardi once said, "Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good.""

This is another rum that comes awfully close to a 10. I definitely put it on the same level as Vizcaya VXOP and Plantation XO 20th Anniversary. My personal "Three Amigos" if you will.

A little in the sweet side for me. I would say I like their 12 year better.

nose -- dark fruit, dry fruit, creamy, subdued, rich, sophisticated.

palate -- smooth, minimal alcohol bite. dark fruit. a pleasant bitterness after taste.

This is a smooth operator here, most of mine take a Coke mix or even a bit of sprite for a change, excellent all around. I do have a preference for the 15 year or 12 year old El Dorado but I am glad I tried this one, so much sampling to do!

A very good rum, but not as great as I expected it to be. A little bit too aggressive and sweet at the same time for me, besides that its very good.

I hadn't tasted this in a while, but when I came back to this bottle after a few years, I was surprised at how sweet it is. The added sugar detracts, in my opinion. Otherwise, a fine, well-aged flavorful demerara.

It is a nice rum but not that special. I find that the12 and 15 year have a better overall flavour at a much better price point.

Like other El Dorados, this one great example of heavy demerara rums.
obviously it's the best of the 12-15-21 series. I think that Pusser's and other Navy rum blends consist a big part of these

Dark mahogany color, very rich looking. Notes of caramel, molasses, and spice on the nose, spicy and sweet on the tongue, with a splendid peppery finish. Little on the pricey side for me as a normal usage rum, but if you get a chance to try it, you'll enjoy it I'm sure!
