Guyana | Aged | 40% ABV | Pot and Column Still Distilled

El Dorado 12-Year Rum is composed of a blend of aged rums, all at least 12 years old. The rums are distilled using a combination of stills including coffey stills and a double wooden pot still before being aged in bourbon oak casks.

Demerara Distillers of Guyana produces El Dorado 12-year rum and is the country's last remaining distillery, with origins tracing back to 1670. The name ""El Dorado"" references the legendary city of gold that is said to be in the country's Rupununi region.

I like Demerara rums. Rich molasses is just what I am into.
And El Dorado 12 could be spot on. Woody, leathery, raisiny nose. Clear smell of molasses, caramel, somewhat funky, a hint of smoke. All great. But... ...you can already smell the sweetness. It is much too well-rounded, much too polite, too smooth.

And, on sipping, unfortunately that is exactly how it turns out to be: All the good things from the nose are somewhat there, but muted by way too much sweetness. This kills the funk and mutes everything else. To its credit, it gets better after a few months in the open bottle, when oxidation took its toll. This seems to increase the wood in the finish, which makes for a nice dry ending. The rum is still too sweet in general.
I am not sure I like the liquorice note in the taste. That is probably from the rum itself and reminds me of the part that I do not enjoy too much in Lemon Hart Demerara and Myers's Dark.

I think this would be excellent stuff if unsweetened. A wasted opportunity. I like the (considerably cheaper) Pusser's much better. Even though the potential of the El Dorado 12 clearly shines through. Frustrating. Thus my verdict: Good stuff, but somewhat spoiled with sugar and thus frustrating.

Still, the price is quite good and if you like sweeter rums, but you also would like some actual flavours in your rum, this is a good choice.

Honey, fruit and spice with a dry finish. Very drinkable.

In der Nase leichte Citrusfrüchte, geschmacklich sehr caramelig mit leicht scharfem Alkohol. Lang anhaltender Abgang.

The smoothest of the 3 (12, 15, 21).
A simple rum, not complex but very tasty. To small bottle, runs out quick!

I have a bottle of this at home, feels more like an after dinner drink than a sipping rum. Still quite nice and would recommend.

This one is my favorite rum at the moment. It is a sweet woody spicy rum with fruits which has a mild to medium alcohol warmth to it when you swallow. It is very flavorful and sweet which is what I like and the alcohol warmth keeps the rum lively. Excellent!

Har kun smagt 12 års, som også altid skal være i en rom samling. Har hørt at 15 og 21 hører lige så meget til i en romsamling. Skal på ønske listen.

I got this on recommendation. I can see why it has won awards. Very smooth, nice sweet flavours and goes down well. The only thing keeping me from giving it a higher rating is the fruity, and slightly licorice notes that don't agree with my personal palate. When I compare it to the Plantation Grande Reserve from Barbados, it is a smoother version of that for my purposes at double the price. Glad I tried it, but unfortunately, my search for the perfect rum continues....

This was the first sipping rum I ever purchased... I have not had a glass of whisky since this hit my tongue. It is fantastic. As I try more rums I may come back Nd adjust the score accordingly.
