Guyana | Aged | 40% ABV | Pot and Column Still Distilled

El Dorado 12-Year Rum is composed of a blend of aged rums, all at least 12 years old. The rums are distilled using a combination of stills including coffey stills and a double wooden pot still before being aged in bourbon oak casks.

Demerara Distillers of Guyana produces El Dorado 12-year rum and is the country's last remaining distillery, with origins tracing back to 1670. The name ""El Dorado"" references the legendary city of gold that is said to be in the country's Rupununi region.

The smell is fruity and alcoholic...last goes away a bit after letting it breathe...but still sensable...

The taste is good with a burn at the end...the taste sticks a while around...

I tried after the 12 year old the older brother, the elderly dorado 15. Did not like it too much...it kinda stinks compared to the 12. I am surprised as well that they differ so much from each other...the taste is Ok from the 15, but the smell and taste is in my opinion way better with the younger 12.

I give the 12 a solid 7...but there are better rums out there...for example the Plantation 20th Anniversary...from the price range closer to the 15. In the same price range of the 12 ist the Ron Barco de Vargas which tastes better than the 12.

I will keep the 12 in my bar stock though.

The smell is a bit sharp to the nose, a good afterburn. Some oaky, vanille, caramel hints are there. I tried this neat and doesnt wooow's me but BUT, if you put 1 icecube in it all the flaouvers symbiose together, smooth and it starts a party in the glass. A big + to the flavours and sharpness

I'm not sure where the prior reviewer is buying rum, but in my experience the 12 and 8 year are around the same $20-25, while the 15 yr is hard to find for less than $40 these days. . (Edit : The 12 yr has recently spiked a bit in price to the $28-30 range.)

And the opinion that it doesn't compare favorably to the 15 yr is not shared by many - in addition to myself, at least half the serious rum critics and aficionados I know of prefer the 12 year, though IMO the margin is slim and I love both. However, given the difference in price I see no reason to buy the 15 yr.

One thing to note - the 12 and 15 yr are completely different rums, with different components from the variety of stills used by Demerara Distillers.

Edit : I have recently knocked my rating of this rum down a couple points since I found out that it has a ridiculous amount of added sugar - 45 g/ltr, the most among any rums on the Swedish national list. The 15 yr has less sugar at 31 g/ltr, but still a substantial amount. I still like the rum quite a bit, and the potent flavors are not overwhelmed by the added sugar - but cannot in good conscience give it the 9 I formerly had knowing that it has been sweetened so much.

This is a hallmark of Demerara Distillers and it’s a consistent expanse of their prowess. The level of caramel would be too much if it didn’t play so perfectly well with the banana flavors it exhibits. This is something that all rum drinks can love.

I find this rum to be a safe bet for anyone just getting into the world of rum. I like it and want to rate it higher than a 7 but i like the El Dorado 15 year old just a little better. In reality i would give this a 7.5 if it were possible. The only negative i find about it is that it is just a little too far on the sweet side but it's still good. On ice this one becomes an 8/10 because it tones down the sweetness a bit and makes it more enjoyable. I was amazed to visit a bar in Southend, Essex, which actually had this behind the bar! I was so happy to see a bottle of this rather than the usual rums like Captain Morgan etc that this became a 10/10 for the night haha. Every sip was pure gold because of my happiness to find this stocked.
