Black Coral Light rum

Black Coral Light

United States | Light | 40% ABV

Black Coral Light rum, a reflux-distilled (it’s a custom built reflux still that the distillery says behaves more like a pot still), Florida molasses-based rum that’s aged in both new charred white oak barrels and another type of barrel the distillery mysteriously describes as “other.” After six months, the barrel-aged rums are blended and filtered with a coconut husk carbon filtration method and bottled at 80 proof.

No complexity. No smell. No taste. Just slight alcohol burn. Don't think I'll buy another bottle. Disappointing for $25 rum.

Aye, this rum be truly different. She smells amazin'... not terribly sweet, which not be a bad thing considerin' there ain't no sugar added to her, but she does smell of spice, with a bit of oak, and just a wee bit flowery. As for the taste, nothin' really stands out. There be a buttery, spicy quality about it that has a hint of... mocha? Lots of burn in the mouth long after she's down the hatch, but not much AS she's goin' down the hatch. As dry rums go, she be quite dry and best suited for mixin'. arrgh!

In my experience, this has the most character in a light, unaged rum by far. There is a distinct vanilla note that makes this rum a happy addition to any cabinet. My recommendation is to make a daiquiri 2:1:1, this stuff:lime juice:simple syrup and watch this rum shine.

I REALLY LIKE the Black Coral Spiced Rum. But the light rum wasn't as good to me.

Although their website describes their rum as molasses based, to me it tastes like more of a rhum agricole and is on the dryer side.

Smells and tastes of sugarcane, spice, and some oak. I don't get the high ratings? Maybe because four of their five '10' ratings came from people who hardly rated any other rums (as of this review)?

Again, their spiced rum is fantastic and is a must try!

Great for mixers, or enjoy on its own. I love it because it's slightly different, and taste of nothing but pure Rum! Craftsmanship goes into this product, it shows!

I've had black coral spiced rum and loved it, but this white rum has made me an even bigger fan! It pairs amazing with coke and has a bit of a chocolate taste. I bought a bottle of the white and found that with it, you can make the most delicious mojitos you'll ever try.

Crystal clear, buttery, not too dry, but also not filled with oils. I put it up against 4 other white rums and in a blind smell and taste test with 5 close rum friends, we all instantly picked this rum. Its aroma is like nothing like i have ever experienced, butterscotch, molasses, a touch of oak and a hint of the char from the barrel, they say its oak aged minimum of 6 months, and filtered through coconut carbon. I will agree, as the rum has a touch of coconut oils in it, creating a great mouthfeel. A recommended white rum for sure.

Black Coral rum is distilled and bottled in Riviera Beach, FL and is family owned and operated. It is a small-batch operation with great attention paid to detail.

They describe the rum thusly: "This clear sweet buttery rum is now ready to be pumped into our aging barrels. New charred White Oak Barrels are filled with our rum and set to age. A portion of this rum is set into “other” barrels creating a completely different profile. Those two rums are in time combined in a perfect blend to make Black Coral “Original” Rum."

Since this rum is absolutely clear I assume they filter it since aging in charred barrels would impart some color.

They also have the following on their website: "As a family owned craft-distillery, our product is our life. It is the water we fish in and the woods we live in. Our vision is one few ever see. Call us crazy, but, wouldn’t it make sense if people and moreover businesses based their goals not only on how to help themselves, but also how we can help others? And so we ask you to join us in helping a cause very close to our hearts, United States Veterans. There are so many young men and women that have given so much to serve our country, and are finding themselves in need. In light of these brave men and women, we have based this business on the pledge that $1 from the sale of EVERY bottle of our Black Coral Rum goes towards U.S. Veterans organizations."

Good to know. Good for them.

Now on to the rum itself.

As I mentioned before it is absolutely clear. No particulates. No haze. Absolutely crystal clear. It has a very nice aroma indicative of the molasses from which it is made. As I swirl it in my snifter it clings to the sides only to slowly slide down revealing nice legs. Really nice legs. The flavor is quite good. It has a butteriness to it and a hint of sweetness. I detect vanilla and toffee undertones. It does have a little kick to it. A sipping rum for the adventurous perhaps but in my opinion this qualifies as an excellent mixing rum. The finish is somewhat dry. A rather good rum overall and nice to know that a $1 from the sale of each bottle goes to veterans organizations. That alone is reason enough to get a bottle or three. I'm not sure how expansive their distribution is (I did get my bottles {plural} locally) but hopefully word will get out and they will become successful. The rum is quite good. I hope they are aging some of their rum for longer periods to be bottled sometime down the road because their white rum has great potential for aging. My fellow Floridians, I urge you to support Florida distilleries including this one.
