Well that's a very special one! First tasting i was shocked! I just tasted alcool! Strong alcool. The aftertaste was woody. But then, my 2nd and 3rd sip was okay. But i just put a very bit on my tongue. I think this is great with a bit water or ice in it.
It starts very smooth: lots of fruit. Then - mostly in the palate - there sets in some heavy oak. One must like that. I, for one, do. The finishing again oak, a little fruit, a bit spicy. Just a bit too much of burning alcool to be really excellent. Still - I would recommend it to friends who like more than Bourbon...
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Like all Caronis from 1998, this one is rather dirty. But I discovered also some fruits in the background. I think this is because of the dilution to 40%. We should consider the times where it's almost impossible to get a Caroni under 100€. I like it also with the dilution, it offers nice and typical flavors.
The dilution is noticeably, 50-55% would be much better. But this one works also with 40%. If you try a Mezan Caroni at 40% you will notice the difference.
The nose is characterized by leather, car tires (rubber) and tar. In the background are some fruit aromas (black currant and plum).
The same is reflected in the taste. Leather, car tires and tar, followed by fruits such as black currant, plum.
Finish: short/middle long, citrus, molasses, some tannins, some tar
I like also to mix this rum with the 10y Bristol Caroni. The 10y Bristol is more medical/fruity but not dirty enough. In combination with this one the two Caronis become spectacular.
