Now this is some good stuff
I really like the Banks rums I've tried. I think their 5-Island is the best white rum I've had to date, and their Banks 7-Golden Age is even better and is the best gold rum I've had to date. So I really wanted to try their aged rum, as I thought that had a great chance of being rated a 10 for me, especially given the high price of over $300.
I was going to save this for my 250th rum review, but I had a sneak taste and realized it wasn't going to be one of my favorites.
This has a fantastic smell, with brown sugar, old leather, spice, and oak. But while the nose is great, the taste also has a strong flavor of bourbon and whisky; too much for my liking as it overtakes the rum goodness. It still retains its sweetness, which is great, but the bourbon/whisky dominates what I believe to be a great rum and makes it not as good as it could be for me.
With that said, if you like rums aged in bourbon, you should give this a try; I believe it's a classic for the style. It's just not my style.
Tried the Banks Endeavour limited edition number 1, 16 year old bottled in 1996 right after Hurricane Irma and what a positive surprise. The rum has a bit stronger smell than the taste, but it is so smooth with no burn at all. There are strong influences of Bourbon, so if you like your rum aged in Bourbon barrels, then you will absolutely love the Banks Endeavour. I like my aged rums sweeter, hence the 8 rating. One of the most mellow flavor profile aged rums I have ever tried from over 300 aged rums.
