Doorly's XO 6-Year

ErikV12 avatar image had this rum recently

Barbados | Aged | 43% ABV | Pot and Column Still Distilled

Produced in Barbados by master distiller Richard Seale, the rums in Doorly XO have been aged a minimum of 6 years before finishing in Olorosco sherry casks. The second maturation in sherry casks is rare and gives Doorly XO its unique flavour.

I'm a sucker for Barbados rum. I am an even BIGGER sucker for tasty Barbados rum.

Doorly's XO is exactly that. Glad I finally got a bottle.

Another product from the folks at R.L. Seale & Company so you know you are getting some of the finest in quality when it comes to rum. No additives. No sugars.

This rum is a blend of older rums and then matured in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks (or barrels?)

The color is a rich, deep amber and the aroma is delightful. As usual I am unable to determine specific subtleties in the aroma but can only tell you that it smells great. No astringency.

The flavor is fantastic. An initial sweetness indicating molasses and a nice vanilla/toffee undertone which then is joined in by that oak mentioned early.

Here's where is gets interesting for me. With many rums aged in oak a noticeable bitterness from the oak tannins is present and often tends to overtake the flavor.

HOWEVER with this rum, the oak flavor joins and blends with the initial flavors and never actually overwhelms. It is noticeable but is beautifully balanced. It rapidly fades revealing a delicious finish consisting mostly of the natural molasses.

This is a rum that could be considered a sipping rum by many. Some would disagree. It makes an out-freakin'-standing mixing rum no matter how you cut it...or mix it. I cannot think of any beverage that would not benefit from Doorly's XO.

Now one would think that for such a fine rum a bottle would cost $45-$50 USD?

How about $17 USD?

SERIOUSLY!

This is one of those rums that you get the most bang for your buck. The flavor is worthy of a $50 price tag but R.L. Seale and Company chose to charge much less.

That alone is worth a couple of ratings points from me.

I continue to grow more and more impressed with R.L. Seale & Company.

This is a great rum.

and a pretty good sipper too. 6-12 yo blend finished in Oloroso Sherry barrels and not overdone. Other rums stay too long in sherry barrels and get too sweet imo. Works exceptionally well in combo rum drinks and I think adds a little something to other rums as well.

This Rum was recommed to me in Total Wine by one the sales associate, so I had to buy it. For the same price I can get a much better rum, which meets my expectations as a premium rum.

This is very good rum - perhaps not top shelf, but I doubt you'll find better for 16 bucks anywhere. It's nice and dry, with a nutty, oak profile that is reminiscent of fine sherry. Really quite satisfying. They do rum right in Barbados.

This is one of those rums that could turn whiskey and bourbon drinkers over to rum. I find that to many whiskey drinkers don't explore rum because they think it is either to sweet or all tastes like Morgan and Bacardi gold. This one shows that even bargain rums can have depth and complexity.

Nice rum with a sweet delicate taste, but not overpowering on the sweetness. Nice oaky compoments too. Agree with other reviewers - good value for money!

Rich, balanced, a perfect sipper for reasonable price. I very much reccomend this one!

Wow. I had this down as a 7 based on my memories of it, but I have to up it to an 8. Seriously good rum, with a wonderful complexity underneath the somewhat closed nose and palate. The sherry ageing is really really well done, and not overly intrusive. While I love (even more than this XO) the Foursquare Port and Zinfandel finishes, the wood does impinge a bit.

Rich, velvety, wonderful bite from the alcohol rounded off with a dry finish that has great length. A stunning rum.

A good sipper and a bargain for what you get. Typical Barbados rum and it`s real. What I lack is a bit more "punch".

A fantastic rum, made with great skill. It's not a syrup ladened foo foo rum. It's gets even better with a bit of oxidisation. Can punch you in the face when a new bottle is opened and isn't let to sit in the glass for about 10 mins. However when treated right it opens up to be multifaceted enjoyment juice. Everyone should have a bottle of Doorly's in the cabinet.

Can’t complain for the price it cost. Foursquare is definitely the rum for people who are usually bourbon drinkers. Still pretty smooth, and like I said, for under $25, no complaints here
