Don Q Gold rum is produced in Puerto Rico by the famed Serralles family. The ""Gold"" brand is aged between 1-5 years and then carbon filtered.
Don Q has over 140 years of history with the original distillery being founded in 1865. Its name is derived from the famous La Mancha character Don Quixote.
This is a wired rum as it's labelled as a golden rum but it is really light in colour. Myself I like a really flavourful golden aged rum and this is more along the lines of a white rum than gold which is what makes its bizarre.
It's hard to understand exactly how the gold is so much worse than the cristal. This is not a good spirit but there are plenty worse, and may have a better rating than it deserves because of my reluctant ambivalence to the brand
At this price point, I think there are much better rums out there like Flor De Cana 4 year and Cruzan. Don Q gold has a harsh alcohol "bouquet" and a somewhat "chemical" flavor to me. It's drinkable but I'm not inclined to buy it again, even as a mixing rum.
Light straw colored, like white wine or cider. Light aroma, like an rubbing alcohol. Lightly sharp taste, a lot of alcohol. Use in a drink, maybe...?
This rum's colour is a faint yellow - not very "gold" at all. It smells like rubbing alcohol and has a harsh taste with a hint of sweetness... Doesn't look or taste like an aged rum, and when mixed with cola its drinkable, but really more comparable to a white rum.
Un ron ideal para mezclar, un sabor impresionante para mezclar
Don Q Oro is my favorite everyday rum. Its taste is refreshing and its aromas are balanced when served as Cuba Libre, with lime and coca cola. It is smooth and I csn drink it all night snd nevet get tired of it!
The other reviews kept me away from this one up until now because they are right. It is pale in color and almost could pass for a white rum. As others have said, the after taste is quite unpleasant and bitter. I compared this side by side against Cruzan Gold, which is my top recommended rum among those for less than $20. No contest. Even at only $9 per bottle, I won't be buying this one again.
And later that evening: this shit is horrible, so I dock it one point. It's clear brother called Don Q Cristal is much better, as others have said. As bad as this one is, it is still better than anything by Bacardi or Captain Morgan.
Sampled this rum during a tasting seminar at Cardiff Rum Festival.
Not much to say about this one. Pretty standard cocktail bar fare. Not a sipper by a long shot. How old even is it? Got to be 1 or there abouts.
Very enjoyable oaky rum flavor.Velvety mouthfeel.Smell is like how it tastes.Smoothness is not great but that's how rum should be in my opinion.
Don Q Gold is decent when mixed with Coke, but as a neat sipper rum, not so much. Harsh alcohol smell, very weak bland color and nasty taste if you try it neat.
I had a really bad week, and I was broke and drank all of the Kirk and Sweeney 12 year in my liquor cabinet. Hiding in the back I spotted a bottle of Don Q that a friend had brought over and I put my nose in the air and quickly shoved it in the back to never be seen again until today. Not a horrible rum, but not something I would purposely buy to consume myself unless my pockets were light. Mixed with coke I think it tastes better than Bacardi
sippable rum that is fairly cheap. Flavors are definitely oriented towards cigar smokers. Very similar flavor, actually, to Flor de Cana.
Almost no smell. Taste is also very mild. Nothing bad, but not too many good things either.
This isn't a particularly bad rum but it's quite unremarkable, possibly better to mix it with something
Very alcoholic taste but throat feeling is not too harsh. Gets better as you keep drinking it.
DonQ Gold and ginger ale is a cool refreshing drink. Plus it's cheap.
Good quality for the cost. Very smooth and easy to drink straight or on ice.
It's good in rum punch where there is a lot of other flavors present.
Ok mixer but the cristal is a better option. Has a peculiar flavor and smell.
Definitely not a sipping rum, but unique in it's own way. I found an odd sweetness to it that I have not found elsewhere, except in Nephew and Wray overproof, which I hated. Somehow this rum pulls it off, but only as a mixer, or an "I gotta get drunk" shooter.
Better than Bacardi Gold. This is a rum and coke rum.
Pineapple and pepper nose with a caramel/pepper finish.
