2925 Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva Ratings

This was formerly my highest rated rum, which also happened to be one of the ultimate sugar bombs with about 10 teaspoons of added sugar, albeit well chosen for the flavors similar to how a great chef chooses spices for stellar dishes.

Since my only bottle that I took a risk on that exceeded my limit of $50 per bottle slowly rose to the ranks of a 10 rating, I had no choice except to compare the Columbian to this Venezuelan back to back. Sorry, but no contest, since Dictador XO Insolent wins hands down for having my only rating of 10. This DRE rum still ranks at the top of my very small pack of rums that I have rated as a 9, but only one rum of mine deserves a rating of 10 at his point.

Update: My first bottle is now long gone, but deemed to be one of only two sugar bombs worth replacing. The other sugar bomb is El Dorado 12. My new bottle will remain unopened for quite some time. When finally opened, I will record that date in my spreadsheet to make sure that it gets consumed within two months. Sugar bombs never last beyond 3-4 months due to oxidation in the bottle.

This one is also criticized for being a sugar bomb. However, it takes incredible knowledge of chemistry to create the perfect sugar additives. The master distiller for this rum obviously has this task mastered, which is no easy task, This rum will always be my guilty pleasure despite being a sugar bomb.

Update April 12, 2019: It has been many months since I bought more of this rum because I have been getting away from rums that are heavily sugared. The only reason that I recently bought two more bottles was for the fear that the USA will force an embargo on Venezuelan products and we may no longer be able to get their rums. Well, I opened one of the bottles a few days ago and it tastes nothing at all like the DRE that I first fell in love with. They either changed the formula due to multiple criticisms of added sugars, or my taste buds have adapted to appreciate much drier rums. At any rate, I now drop my rating from an 8 to a 7.

I purchased this based on many reviews I had read online a few years ago. Boy it did NOT disappoint! In fact, at the time, it was the smoothest, tastiest rum I had ever had! Beautiful bottle that is frosted green with what appears to be a currency for the label. It looks great sitting on my or any bar. The nose is pleasant with vanilla and honey. The color in the glass is a fantastic rich cognac color. In the mouth, mild spiciness, wood, nuts and vanilla. Clean finish. Definitely a sipping rum and should be in your stash without question.

Dosed and doctored rums that pass themselves off as “premium”by basically manipulating the sugar content are annoyingly ubiquitous these days. Diplomatico RE is perhaps the most shining example of this, they really have the whole world fooled with this one. People mistake sweetness for judicious aging and they assume the elevated price to equal quality. To use some drug terminology, what you actually have here is a stomped on mediocre column still rum which dissipates incredibly fast from the palate (not a good sign). Now, I don’t have a problem with rum coming in many different variations. What I dislike about Diplomatico is that it manipulates its products to feed directly into the stereotype of rums being overly sweet not-quite-real spirits. This is a major insult to the incredible world of rum and I feel that this bottle is cynically manipulating that erroneous perception to cash in from people who don’t know any better. A less-than-mediocre rum and a disservice to the rum world at large. Hats off to their undoubtedly excellent sales and marketing teams though.

this is so additive-laden (40gms + per liter of added sugar, vanilla, etc) and artificial that I wouldn't recommend it even for a novice (which most of the reviewers here seem to be). ok as an after dinner liqueur maybe. But then there are lots of those.

It's sweet and slightly pleasant, but this is not a rum but a liqueur. There is lots off added sugar and it also has a strong taste of vanilla, no doubt added.

It was hard to believe that a rum was so cheap for some to be one of the ten best rum in the world. The perfect demonstration that the price is not synonymous with perfection. It is perfectly balanced rum and butterscotch flavor ( sweet as candy) is pleasant . It will be perfect with dessert (crème brûlée...)

Is good but is far too simple...
Just some fruits, some little spice, too sweet (probably a lot of added sugar).
It's made to please everyone's taste...
Don't chose it if you want to find a true rum.

This rum blew me away! I can't believe it's only $32.49 (Total Wines & More 2020). Toffee, cacao, vanilla, gingerbread, oak, molasses, wow! Smooth as silk too; don't even bother mixing it. I prefer this over many others that cost far more.

Alkohol: 40 %
Původ: Venezuela
Aroma: Tradiční kůže, lesní med, dřevo a při hlubším pátrání ve sklence až plástve, lehce i propolis. (86 b)
Chuť: Mísí se zde krásná uhlazenost a jemnost v tom nejlepším slova smyslu s jemnou štiplavostí, vyzrálostí dřeva a medovou sladkostí.
Když budu hodně přísný, tak trochu dřevitá dochuť celkový dojem maličko ruší, ale nic významného. (88 b)
Body: 87
Shrnutí: Hlavně v chuti si mě získal, hodně sympatický reprezentant Venezuely.

I imagine there are genuinely worse "rums" out there, but I've yet to have them, hence the generous "2". First sip of Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva was like drinking a sugar syrup and it just went downhill from there. The flavor is cloying and all off, would consider this a liqueur and not a real rum. I can't even drink it with a mixer, and it has been relegated to filling space in my liquor cabinet until I can foist it on someone who only thinks they like drinking rum. For those who are looking for good Venezuelan rums, I'd suggest Santa Teresa or Pampero. Run away from this one.
