I went searching for another bottle or two of Foursquare ECS Shibboleth this afternoon. Since the two liquor stores that are well stocked and never show what rums they have on hand, this would increase my chances of finding a bottle just by happening to pop in. Well, no Shibboleth, but they had a Redoutable for only $113. I almost bought that one. Then out of the corner of my eye, this long coveted rum was peaking from a hidden corner behind the locked glass case. I asked the clerk if it was what I thought and he went to get the key. Yes it was Diplomatico Ambassador, which I had been wanting for at least two years. My choice was now a no brainer and this is now the most expensive rum that I ever bought at $231 US.. The Foursquare stayed on the shelf because I don't care for Madeira casking in my rums. A bottle of Hampden Estate Euphoria in a gift box also stayed behind the locked glass case for only $155 US.

Despite my initial rating of 9, it is not worth what I paid for it. The sherry notes absolutely dominate and there is very little burn despite the high ABV%. This will never become a collectible rum for two reasons. First, the price is too damn high in the first place. A hundred US dollars would be a steal. Second, it has about 24 gpl of added sugar. It is sweet, but not a sugar bomb like it's much more affordable cousin DRE.

My memory of this one being what is the most expensive pour at a popular tiki bar in Las Vegas also inspired me to just go for it. Except that I did not win the jackpot.

Update only one day later: This "rum" wound up being one of my fastest sinkers in my ratings, from a low 9 to a high 7. I rate the liquid that is in the bottle and not the bottle itself. I am now convinced that most of the high ratings on this one are biased from the very expensive and fancy bottle. Rather than admit like myself that they have all been ripped off, they choose to justify their waste of money by mentally masturbating over this gorgeous bottle along with their other fancy bottles in their collection.

My own "current group of rums" (note that I am not a collector) looks like a crazy quilt of bottles in all price ranges. They are similar to my vast music collection of more than 800 artists from 58 genres that would take me 68 days non-stop to listen to all of them. The same goes for my group of current rums. They are there to satisfy my needs for having whatever I want whenever I want. This grossly overpriced rum will get stuck into the back of my cabinet behind my half dozen bottles of mezcals.

I often criticize Foursquare. ECS rums as tasting too much like bourbon (except for their recent Shibboleth release). If I wanted a bourbon, I could save lots of money and buy a real bourbon. Well, the same goes for this Ambassador. If I wanted my rum to taste totally like sherry, then I could save a shit load of money and just buy sherry. You have been warned!

Honest as usual...

Update only 13 days after opening: This one has now slid down to my rating of 6. And it is now my all time worst purchase for a rum, even moving down below my former long standing worst buy of Goslings Family Reserve.

After note a year later: This rum was purchased one month before having to go through Hurricane Ida on August 29, 2021. At that time, about one third of this bottle had been consumed. To alleviate the stress of sweltering hot days after the storm with no power, several rums came in handy. This was one of them. It was then that I realized that this was one nasty ass rum thanks to way too much sherry aging. Most of the cost for this one went into the really fancy bottle. I slowly finished the bottle to get it out of my sight. Normally, this would garner my rating of 5, as my clue to never buy again. However, I chose to not lower the score for the sake of others who may wind up liking it.

And by all means keep this very fancy bottle to store much cheaper and better rums in for your guests. You paid heavily for this bottle, so it's yours.

The nose is all sherry and I was concerned for a second that I had just purchased a bottle of sherry but the raisin flavor was light and surrounded by other complex flavors. It's fairly sweet and extremely delicious! It has an amazing color with a bit of aging. It is probably the best rum I've ever had. It wasn't cheap and it was not available in my home state, so I was nervous about it being in my checked luggage when I got back from vacation (it ran me $240) but it made it and was well worth the money and stress. I tried it with a friend of mine and we paired it with metal rocks cubes, some dark chocolate and Cuban cigars. It was practically a religious experience! If you can find it and afford it, buy it immediately! Weird side note, the bottle top weighs in at about a pound, which I was not expecting. Seriously, this is probably the best rum I have ever had. It's gorgeous in color, delicious in nose, easy on the mouth and tastes like paradise in a glass! Buy it without further delay!

A nice rum thats is almost like Single Vintage, but twice the price !
Since it it 47% ABV, the taste is more harsh.
NOT worth the price in any way !
Go with Single Vintage or Mantauno instead !

10 for the Bottle and possibly the packaging.

6 for the rhum, with very high Sherry taint.

Went for it, as bottle lured me, but that is the best experience you will have, is picking up bottle and lifting the weighty cork.

Had a better experience with the Collection 1 and 2, the 3 being too much a … whiskey.

-2cl Muster-

Beautiful rich amber with copper reflections in the glass.
In the nose very restrained and not at all intrusive but not boring. Mild and delicate burnt caramel is deglazed with freshly squeezed grape must. Mushrooms and wild herbs gathered on a rainy day are added and finished with a pinch of pepper and clove powder.
Stimulatingly delicate and mouth-filling on the palate. The grape must caramel brings a great tart-sweet balance to the tongue. Harmoniously alternating flavors, caramel, wine grapes and other white berries, vanilla, some nutmeg, lie nicely draped in an old wine barrel.
In the finish, the flavors linger long, the wild herbs and a little bit of smoke join in.
A super balanced rum that needs time to breathe, a long diplomatic negotiation.
But is it worth the money? That everyone must decide for themselves. For rum fetishists, well-heeled and as a deluxe bar content

What a wonderful rum. Dark Amber colour, and very smooth.

Nicely oaked and have hints of it in the nose. Does not have added sweetness. But I am surprised it does leave a trace of alcohol burn. Not much though as it is 94 proof or 47%

I had to buy a bottle for my evenings after long hours at work with kids. I thought about a nice rum to remind me the time I was living in the Caribbean. I was delighted with the box and the elegant bottle. The nose is quite strong at first and attacked me a bit certainly cause of the 47percents of alcohol. Itis spicy with a strong vanilla smell. At the first try you can feel a very nice creamy effect with notes of caramel, dry fruits like with a cake. Also some vanilla. Then I felt some nice coffee and dark chocolate notes. Finally if you stop drinking for a bit and leave the flavors developping in your mouth, you really have a nice and warm feeling. You definitely want to have some more. It is complex, sweet and strong at the same time. Nice piece of work for sure.

A truly master piece, very rich and bold, its dark color tells you how much flavor is in it, hazelnuts and chocolate hints without being too fruity.

This rum is powerful. Strong, full aroma yet smooth on the palate. It’s the most expensive rum I’ve tried so far but it is excellent. It’s far superior to the other rums in my profile.

Lightly sweet, with notes of oak, vanilla and smoke.

Outstanding.

Edit: 9/14/20

Still an excellent rum, but as usual, more experience has shown me that while it’s expensive, that doesn’t mean it’s a 10. I’m downgrading to an 8.5 because while very good, it lacks some depth that I believe is due to additives that may cover some inherent flaws.

Would I buy it again? Yes, but not until I’ve added Appleton Estate Joy and 30 year to my collection.

- vůně, žena cítí vanilkovou zmrzlinu politou Salkem, já kombinace sladkostí, čokoláda, sherry, dřevo a kouř
- chuť sladká, 47% dává o sobě vědět, vypálené dřevo, dojezd dlouhý, jemně nahořklý, rozinky zůstávají v ústech hodně dlouho, skvělý!

My wife bought this rum from Manitoba for our 30th anniversary but New Year's Eve is the time for this $411 bottle. The presentation is top notch and the colour of the rum begs you to open it. The first nose is quite strong but opens up after 15 mins in the glass. Dark chocolate, caramel and vanilla are strong and balanced with a long perfect finish. I will still vote for the 2000 S.V. for my favourite, for almost a third the price.
