All my tastings & opinions are on tasting done neat. No ice , no mixes !!
I purchased this bottle a few months ago and it took my time to enjoy it for as long as possible.
Notes of buttery Caramel, but not the sweetness or taste, Very smooth, with a bit of burn / after wards. Has other aromas, i don't recall as it was a while ago. A great bottle to gift and impress someone. However for the price, I find other rums that match or exceed for daily and occasional consumption
(1. December 2018)
Smokey aroma filled with wholenuts.
Taste also full wholenuts, vanilla, honey, roasted oak.
Flavours are too intense not so mild as 12yrs edition.
Very good rum. Warm, smooth, with chocolate and coffee tones. Problem is that I couldn't find difference between this and Dictador 12. If you are looking to save some money, choose 12y instead.
Yes, this was nice. 20 year old spirits can be strong but this wasn’t. Nice and smooth with a strong coffee smell but not overpowering taste.
Dark caramel flavours and sweetness. Still a bit sharp like most middleclass rums
I had heard many things about this South American rum before trying it, with a lot of people saying, that whether you like it or not, then it is a rum, that you should try for yourself at least once.
Nose: Roasted coffee, caramel and a hint of oak and figs
Taste: Soft and round taste of cocoa, caramel and hints of toasted honey. Aftertaste is very short.
Overall: There is no doubt, that this a rum with a special and distinct style. You can easily taste, when you are having a Dictador rum. With that being said it has some good special notes, but the lack of aftertaste and the 40 abv hurts the overall rating.
If you've had the 12yo, this is like that but more!
The nose is prune-like Christmas cake, which is carried through on the palate, along with hints of coffee. It is incredibly smooth, with the hit of alcohol coming at the back end. A beautiful long finish.
It may not be everyone's style, but even if not, the high class of distilling should be plain to see.
This Dictador is priced at about halfway between Dictador 12 and Dictador XO Insolent. So I needed to find out if it is worth the extra money over the 12 and is it almost as good as the XO Insolent? The answer to both questions is "YES!!!". The flavors are much more pronounced than the 12 and comparing side by side almost makes the 12 seem like a bourbon. Since this company also sells coffee and stores the beans in the barrels used to age these rums, coffee dominates the taste. You will either love these rums or hate them. I happen to love them. Great taste with no added sugars.
Since this is the second most expensive rum that I have ever purchased ($65), I consider it and it's older brother XO Insolent at $96 to be reserved for special occasions. I am glad that I bought a whole bottle to test side by side against the 12 rather than try one ounce at a bar and rely on my memory of what the 12 tasted like. These two are not even close in comparison to taste.
After only 5 days of opening this bottle and comparing it to my other highly rated rums, I have no choice except to raise my initial rating from a 9 to a 10! However, if you hate coffee, you will disagree with me on this one. This one for me is a $65 bottle of perfection in a rum. I would not hesitate to buy this one again on a regular basis. Only 25% of the rums that I have rated here fall into this category of repeat purchases being justified.
Update August 10, 2019: I now find myself with all three of my favorites: Dictador 12, Dictador 20, and Dictador XO Insolent. Time for side by side comparisons neat. This one makes the Dictador 12 seem like Angostura 1919. which is a good thing, but still not up to the level of the finest Dictadors. This is still damn good rum worthy of my 10 rating, but it lacks the refined finish of the Dictador XO Insolent. If that finish is worth an extra $35 US per bottle to you, then go for it.
I was very impressed by the black box and mysterious black bottle, very sexy. The color was a dark amber, darker than I would have expected. Since I knew this was partly a pot still distillation, I was looking for a floral nose, full of esters, but it was not there. I did get the earthy, slightly moldy, grassy nose that I expect from a sugarcane syrup wash. I also got some nice vanilla and a hint of banana in the nose. The initial mouth feel was soft, as I would expect from a aged rum, but it did not last long. I got a burn in the middle of my tongue, and light sugar along the sides. It was not particularly complex, and faded to bitter in the end. The addition of a splash of water helped to smooth the whole thing out. Overall, it was not bad, but I had better and expected more.
The toffee syrup is not as strong as in XO Insolent, but you can taste more of the alcohol instead. All in all, it is still far removed from any semblance of decent rum to get any positive review.
Bought a sample of this from www.masterofmalt.com (Drink by the Dram) for around £5-6 to try it a bottle usually retails at the 50-60 mark. The packaging and lool of the liquid in the glass are inviting. I let it breathe in the glass for a few minutes before sampling.
On the nose definite oaky woodiness and fruit, a little smokiness, sweet.
In the mouth, it's smooth with the tiniest touch of smoky warmth, no harshness but slightly dry. There are subtle sherry flavours coming through but not overpowering, there are hints of tobacco too.
It is simply a delight to sip.
Pro me absolutne nezajimavy.
This is a good Rum. Probably another half point. But I tasted this after the XO. It was a disappointment - bad planning. It lacked the smoothness and depth of the XO. Still a good rum. But a long way short of the XO.
