Thanks so much for submitting a report. It has been emailed to the Rum Captain and will be actioned shortly.
This rum is good, nice nose, mouth and finish. Drank it neet, i would recommend you ket it breathe a bit. Manly rum..
not sweet, but nice smell and good taste above average. Catching eyes bottle and I would recommend it to most of average Rum lovers
Nice relatively light pour.
Pleasant nose, with no harshness or alcohol.
Mouth feel is good.
My initial reaction was "too much of an alcohol burn\taste", however this was completely gone on subsequent sips.
Chocolate and coffee predominate.
There is a bit of an alcohol burn, however this is not necessarily a bad thing, and the more subtle tastes begin to develop as this burn dissipates.
The after taste is pleasant and lingers.
My initial reaction to Dictador 12 had not been good so this bottle has sat on the shelf for quite a while. I decided to retry it, simply to be able to write this review. I think the difference was letting the rum sit in the glass for quite a while, about 20 minutes, prior to drinking it.
Dictator 12 has a beautiful color, the aroma is nice but nothing special. The legs are great, long and thick. Now for the two big factors: The taste is good but not great, smooth and not too much burn. The taste does last in your mouth. Bottom line is that this is a pretty good rum but the price is too much. $40 a bottle. You can get a rum just as good for under $30.
Taste 6+/10. Strong alcohol taste, little sweetness, little wood and chocolate which saves everything in taste. Only nice complexity in taste is the chocolate. Buy better El Dorado 12 or Diplomatico Reserve.
Makes a great rum espresso martini. As a sipper the overpowering coffee notes on the nose and palate make this very one dimensional.
Oh no. Shamelessly flavoured. Butterscotch? Plums? Im guessing some kind of fruit. At least its not sweet.
Not estery and I can’t find oak despite the rum being quite dark
Its a good semi-liquor. I can see it being a great cocktail modifier but it shouldn’t be labeled as rum.
If I had a choice I would leave the rating blank.
It is nice, with slight vanilla flavour however, it is a bit sharp.
Someone offered me to taste the 12y, to turn me around about my opinion on Dictador rums. It is less bad than 20y which is less bad than XO Insolent, but the artificial coffee flavoring or whatever additive they use kills this product.
Filtered through 100% Arabica and that is exactly what you feel in its taste. Very similar taste to his 100 months old relative.
Good noose of liquor. Good taste of chocolate. Are very similar to Companero Panama, but else a different kind of rum at a very good Price.
Well it has body, very tastfull rum: I taste coffee, leather, sigars, oak, vanilla.
It is sweet, but not too much, little burn.
Just not for me, I'll pass.
Very sweet rum, with notes of chocolate, nuts, caramel and cinnamon. Cheap. A good rum for mixers too...
It has mild oak and brown sugar notes on the nose, smooth on the mouth but a little lacking in flavors.
Dlouho jsem se na tento rum těšil. Konečně nastal čas zakoupit láhev. Vůně slabé kávovo oříškové aroma. V chuti výborný vlašský ořech. Silný suchší ale mile bez pachuti v dozvuku. Příjemná změna po sladkých rumech a koňakovém přeskoku.
Not bad but a bit soft for my taste I can’t distinguish a flavor.
Vyborny 12rocny rum. Vyrazna sladka aroma. Chut trochu alkoholova. Flasa stala 32euro.
This now completes having rums from every country in South America that borders the Caribbean. I tend to forget about those because cruise ships rarely dock there.
The aroma and taste is of toffee with no after burn. The box describes many more flavors, but that is stretching things a bit at first. Give it time and it becomes a gem! This one exceeded my expectations because I was not prepared to like it at all. It was initially rated by me as a 7 because I would not admit to myself that a $38 bottle of aged Columbian rum could not only make it to my top ten, but also become a new all time favorite with all of it's exotic flavors. A wonderful rum that is now in my top five and also has no added sugar!!!
As for a lot of complaints on the coffee taste, this company also sells coffee and stores the beans in these barrels. They also use these barrels to age aguardiente, which explains the sweetness with no added sugar. There is nothing artificial here. This rum also inspired me to try their 20 year solera as well as their XO Insolent. Both of those rums are even better than this one. However, if you hate the taste of coffee, then stay away from Dictador rums. With the USA's obsession with Starbucks, I don't see how anyone can hate the taste of coffee. As for me, I like my own very strong Central American Arabica coffee, which is pretty darn close to Columbia in distance. Columbian coffees are just too tame for me, so this explains why it makes great flavoring for these rums.
Update August 10, 2019: I now have all three of my favorite rums from Dictador for side by side comparisons. This one is still rated as a 9, but it now also reminds of the very best from Angostura, which is their 1919. It only remotely compares to Dictador 20 and is a long way from comparing to Dictador XO Insolent. Since this one is only $38 US, it could also be used to keep from dipping into it's two more expensive brothers.
