This now completes having rums from every country in South America that borders the Caribbean. I tend to forget about those because cruise ships rarely dock there.

The aroma and taste is of toffee with no after burn. The box describes many more flavors, but that is stretching things a bit at first. Give it time and it becomes a gem! This one exceeded my expectations because I was not prepared to like it at all. It was initially rated by me as a 7 because I would not admit to myself that a $38 bottle of aged Columbian rum could not only make it to my top ten, but also become a new all time favorite with all of it's exotic flavors. A wonderful rum that is now in my top five and also has no added sugar!!!

As for a lot of complaints on the coffee taste, this company also sells coffee and stores the beans in these barrels. They also use these barrels to age aguardiente, which explains the sweetness with no added sugar. There is nothing artificial here. This rum also inspired me to try their 20 year solera as well as their XO Insolent. Both of those rums are even better than this one. However, if you hate the taste of coffee, then stay away from Dictador rums. With the USA's obsession with Starbucks, I don't see how anyone can hate the taste of coffee. As for me, I like my own very strong Central American Arabica coffee, which is pretty darn close to Columbia in distance. Columbian coffees are just too tame for me, so this explains why it makes great flavoring for these rums.

Update August 10, 2019: I now have all three of my favorite rums from Dictador for side by side comparisons. This one is still rated as a 9, but it now also reminds of the very best from Angostura, which is their 1919. It only remotely compares to Dictador 20 and is a long way from comparing to Dictador XO Insolent. Since this one is only $38 US, it could also be used to keep from dipping into it's two more expensive brothers.

Update May 11, 2022: I just got the brand new bottles of the 12 and 20 year the other day, without the solera designation. Since I could no longer tell them apart liked I used to, I moved my rating of the 20 year down from a 10 to a 7. I now have no choice but to lower this one down from my rating of a 9 to an 8.

A great balanced nose that is pleasant and a little sweet. A great taste that is neutral between sweet and alcohol. Very smooth with a great taste. A little tangy and not much heat, but a very long lasting aftertaste that reflects the initial taste. I had this neat and is a great sipper. This is amazing on the rocks with coke.

At first taste, this is a pretty good rum. On the front, there is sweetness and honey-like tones. As the alcohol crosses your tongue, the alcohol has a distinctive burn that wipes out the previous flavors. There is a significant dryness to this rum after holding it in your mouth afn swallowing

Like the 20 year old, this Colombian rum has a strong and distinct coffee smell on the initial nose. It goes down smooth, but there is a bit of an afterburn which I don’t get with the 20 yo version.
It’s pricey and overall pretty good, but there are much better options in this price range.

Based on coffee and dark chocolate.. pretty much something more like cognac than rum! In this price you deserve better!

Suprisingly a good rum with intense tones of dark chocolate and coffee. A bit too hars for my taste, the bitterness outpowers other flavors.

Tried it twice, and twice I failed to find any satisfaction in drinking this rum neat. I truly do not recommend. I decided to give it "2" instead of "1", because it is only enjoyable for me when used in hot grog with spices. Otherwise - NO.

At first impact it’s quite strong in your mouth, nothing I’ve experienced before which makes me curious about the 20-year variant of this rum. You can definitely taste the coffee/chocolatey notes which are quite pleasant.

Sweet, smooth rum with very prominent notes of chocolate and coffee. Nice, long aftertaste. I haven't had anything similar in this price range so it might be a very specific taste that some people might not enjoy. I know for sure that I did. Found it especially nice to pair with a good cigar.

Chuť dobrá, mírně ostřejší. Láhev bych toho asi vypít nechtěl. Na zkušenou dobrá věc. Ale - vlastně tomu spíš nerozumím.

Decent sipper. Nothing stands out.....Light nose, decent smooth drink, slight after taste. Good, be not great
