Good rum for mixing smell a lot of molasses in this one plus is a very good value.
Very smoky, but lacks the sweetness that it desperately needs. Good with Coke.
Go to Rum for Mai Tai at Roy's. Try at happy hour.
Tastes just like molasses. I don't often drink it straight, but if I'm making pineapple rum glaze for my island spiced chicken recipe, this is the best.
Has a bit of a bite. Not to $$. Brown sugar / molasses favors. Ok on the rocks but better with a mixer. Haven't yet tried it in a Tiki drink.
I rarely find a rum I will drink straight from the bottle, but this? Add some fresh cream and you're better than halfway to a genuine horchata! The Molasses is very noticeable in both the nose and the aftertaste, and this is an easy drink which won't go after your stomach lining in 5 or 6 hours. I will say this tho- it doesn't play well with "Plantation" style drinks. Black Strap will overpower the fruit punch taste of plantation style drinks in a hurry- Be Warned...
Cruzan has a super strong molasses flavor to it. Drunk straight, the molasses flavours can be overwhelming. I was not a fan. Really needs to be used in mixed drinks.
This molasses flavored thick flavored rum is best for tiki drinks and in tiki drinks it´s fantastic.
Very strong molasses flavor, almost like liquorice. Not bad on the rocks, but better mixed with a little coke or ginger ale.
Very strong molasses or maple flavor to it to costume without a mixer. I used it as an ingredient in a tiki drink and it worked well. Limited use so the bottle will remain in the cabinet until summer....
Its like Cruzan felt compelled to try to compete with other distillers and get a black strap rum out. Maple is a good discription. I like maple on my pancakes, not in my tiki drinks
I had to change my opinion after a little more analysis. This rum is very complex with too much maple syrup flavor for my taste. It has a very strong maple syrup flavor and odor. Heavy mouth-feel and extremely dark color. Could be sipped over ice if you like maple flavor. It did okay in a dark and stormy but terrible as my dark rum selection for a mai tai. Don't know what to do with this one. I would not buy it again.
After a bad experience with Gosling's, I am not really sure why I thought this would be any good. I like Cruzan rums in general, but the "black strap" should have tipped me off as to the overwhelming molasses flavor. I opened the bottle, smelled it, and was immediately saddened.
With it's strong molasses and smokiness it's flavor is difficult to subdue. Use with caution. I use it to enhance other rums that lack character, I use it over chocolate or strawberry ice cream and it rounds out a authentic island rum punch.
Of the dark rums I have tried to so far, this has the strongest molasses taste. It gives the Dark and Stormy a different taste than my usual Gosling's or Old Lahaina. It's a good change up and one you should have in your cabinet.
Smokey, flavorful, and sweet
A decent rum that's ver dark with a strong molasses aroma and flavor. It has a unique taste on the rocks. Great in a rum runner or when mixed with pineapple & orange juice.
I have friends that love this on the rocks, I mix it for the best rum runner in the world.
A great dark rum made from blackstrap molasses. Rich, dark and slightly cloying.
I have had only two shots with this. I found a lingering after taste that wasn't pleasant. May not get another one.
strong burnt molasses / smokey taste, but not as overpowering as Goslings. Best as a mixer, does add a distinct flaver
Very dark and strong molasses flavor. I add a touch of it to other rums that don't taste so great and it helps alot. Like I said strong flavor.
Its good with ginger ale that is all i can say.
I used to love sipping this rum a few years back, but now it has an over-the-top molasses taste and harshness. It works very well in some mixed drinks and with coke (which I rarely drink), but - along with most of the Cruzan line since Fortune brands took over- is a shadow of its former self.
Seems like they changed something, it is a lot sweeter now, almost need to cut it with a clear to make it sippable.
