enjoy the flavors of molasses and maple but not cloyingly sweet. A staple in the cabinet and the price is fantastic too.
I like this strait up or in mix drinks. .have bought this for friends and they like it also
My first try of this one. There is no way I'd mix it with anything sweet (Coke, ginger ale, etc) as it's very sweet itself. Very strong molasses flavor, it's a smooth rum - I decided to cut that heavy flavor with a bit of seltzer & enjoyed it very much.
This stuff is massively underrated. I love keeping this stuff around in the winter time.. It has an amazing molasses flavor and it just makes you feel warm and cozy.
This stuff is cloyingly sweet. Reminded me of the maple syrup chug from Super Troopers. We bought this one night at a good price and could barely drink it. I saved the rum thinking it could be used down the road in a unique mixed drink in lieu of a syrup, but it overpowers everything I put it in.
As a fan of Cruzan rums, I decided to give this a try. At first sniff, the aroma of Boston brown bread came to mind. It has a stronger molasses flavor than most other rums but I also noticed hints of anise and vanilla giving this a fairly complex flavor, but it has a bit of a burn. With that said, I like this rum for a change and enjoyed it most on the rocks during my intial four-step tasting. I plan to explore mixers with this too. At about $16 US for a liter in Ohio, I think it's a good buy if this style appeals. I can think of other more expensive dark rums that I don't like as much as this.
This molasses flavored thick flavored rum is best for tiki drinks and in tiki drinks itยดs fantastic.
On the nose, heavy Molasses, vanilla, honey and Nutmeg. Those notes come through on the palate. There's a slight hint of heat on the tongue but doesn't follow on the way down.
My fav for a Dark n Stormy
Heavy molasses flavor ( which I love ) with a raisin undertone
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

For New Year's, I made my usual pot of black-eyed peas, which calls for 2 TBS of black strap molasses. It had been a long time since I had molasses in the house, so after using only 2 TBS, what on earth was I going to do with the rest? When I found out about the vitamin and mineral content, I would gulp a TBS or two before calling it a night. Eventually, that bottle of Brer Rabbit was gone. Damn, I missed it!!!
Then I got to reading reviews on this Cruzan Black Strap Rum. All I could think of was how I liked the taste of Negrita Dark from Martinique about 22 years ago and then how it did a number on my system the next day. Needless to say, I was reluctant to pick up a bottle of this Cruzan product, which is actually hard to find where I live. Well, I stumbled across a bottle of it today for only $12 and said what the heck and bought it.
I would say that it is no longer rum and it is no longer molasses, but another completely different product. Call it what you want, but I actually enjoyed sipping it neat. Is it an elegant sipper? Hell no! Is it repulsive to me? Hell no! Anyone that cannot find multiple uses for this Cruzan product needs to beef up their imagination. This is light years better than Papa's Pilar Dark and is a tad better than Myer's Dark. I still have very bad memories of Gosling's Black Seal from decades ago and won't even go there. Others have suggested storing the whole bottle in the freezer and then sipping it neat. Good idea and thanks!
Update July 17. 2019: It now comes in a new and wider bottle with the phrase "Estate Diamond" added to it. This would normally make buyers think that is has been improved, but it is now a dollar cheaper than when I first bought it 18 months ago. For all practical purposes, it is still the same rum. I also could find no explanation anywhere what the differences are except for the new bottle and labeling.
