Angostura 1919 8-Year rum

Angostura 1919 8-Year

Trinidad and Tobago | Aged | 40% ABV

Angostura 1919 rum is produced in Trinidad by blending a combination of light and heavy molasses distilled rums. These rums spend at least 8 years aging in American oak bourbon barrels.

The name Angostura "1919" refers to the event in 1932 when Angostura's distillery was destroyed by fire. Miraculously, a handful of barrels filled with rum from 1919 survived and were purchased by J.B. Fernandes - the master blender of Fernandes Distillers.

Many years ago, when dinosaurs walked the earth, you could order a vanilla coke made to order - by a real human - using real vanilla syrup, real Coke syrup, and soda water. Angostura 1919 tastes like old-fashioned vanilla coke. Very easy to guzzle this stuff neat without breaking a sweat...but that's the problem. It's sugary sweet. Not to be taken seriously.

Color: yellow gold, Sauternes
Nose: caramel, toffee, hint of acetone, vanilla, banana bread, latex paint, rubber hose
Taste: mostly flat, earthy esp on the finish, a little metallic, slight bitterness, some nuttiness

Overall: It’s ok, but not remarkable either. Lacking depth and complexity, it’s not an ideal sipper, nor is it punchy enough to stand out in most cocktails.

This one is light amber in the glass as would be expected from less time in oak (although 8 years seems long enough to bring darker color). The nose spicier and oakier than expected with hints of vanilla, caramel, and molasses. The nose brought greater hope than was delivered on the tongue, however, with lighter flavors than were promised by the nose. The finish left me wondering about the promise of the nose once again. In balance, the overall experience left me to put this one on the back shelf until necessity (Covid-19) forced it forward. After more experience, I liked this one more and more, albeit not as much as my other favorites.

A natural rum, but too young with a watery taste (not sure if it's 8 years old, would estimate 4-6 years). Very light, not very intensive, not rich of aromas.
13y Angostura is much better, 16 CDI or 19y Artesanal Trinidad is in another dimension compared to this one.

Smell: oak/barrel, vanilla, some fruits like citrus and berries
Taste: vanilla, spice, oak, bitterness, medicine (almost no fruits)
Fnish: short, spicy light burn

Sweetness: 1.5/5
Fruit: 1.5/5
Spice: 3.5/5
Mildness: 3/5

Bardzo dobry rum w stylu angielskim. Przyjemny czekoladowy zapach i posmak. Do tego suszone owoce i delikatna wanilia. Wspaniały na solo. Bardzo dobry w Old Faschioned.
Rewelacyjny z woda kokosowa i limonka, musicie spróbować.

When I think about 1919 my minds wonders of to the Islay of Bowmore, take away the base of the products and remove the the intense smoke of the Bowmore then I get a similar ageing alcohol.
First time I bought this bottle I wasn't impressed, it was ok, but it's more then ok, much more.
I's say this is a perfect bottle for islay single malt drinkers to try a rum.

Bon rhum de dégustation à boire straight ou avec une glace.

This review is for the older pictured bottle. I must say this is a decent rum all around. I had no issue finishing the bottle neat. The mouth and throat feel is incredibly nice. It has no off putting notes to it. Very well done!

L'odeur est assez intéressante avec des nuances de bois et d'herbe fraîchement coupée. Le goût ne me semblait pas assez complexe. La finale est agréable mais pas longue. J'ai payé 50 euros, je pense que c'est cher pour ce rhum.

Somewhat smoky scent and flavor. Dry and rather crude palate. I don't have very much experience with whiskeys but I would describe the taste as whiskey-like. Not that great for the price (at least in Finland).

I like this one, smooth with an after taste of sweetness around the lips and tongue. Some lingering after taste that I can't quite describe, but it's a good one.
