The Angostura 1824 is a blend of various Trinidad rums that were allowed to be stored in American oak barrels for at least 12 years. The Blend gets his finish in the same used barrels. The "old" version was filled by hand. I don't know if the current version is the same. At least it is no longer on the label. The old bottle was of high quality and with the large wooden cork a real eye-catcher. Whether the rum has additives I do not know, but is in the realm of possibility.

The Angotura 1824 has a nice mixture of sweetness and smoke in the nose. The sharpness of the alcohol evaporates after a few minutes. When drinking, you immediately taste sweet tropical fruits and vanilla from oak. Woody smoky aromas remain on the tongue and envelop the existing sharpness, which is not yet unpleasant. Midway through, the rum bids farewell with a slightly sweet note and pleasant barrel notes.

The Angostura 1824 is a rum that does not get boring. For the price of about 50 euros and does not have to hide. He could be a little milder. One of the rums I still wanted to buy again. But only the old version. Bottle design and the promise of "hand crafted" make him more attractive than the current successor. But then there was the Angostura scandal and one wonders how credible all this is really. So i prefer testing and buying other rums!

Also doch lieber andere Rums probieren!

Edit 28-09-17: I am deducting a point since my new bottle seems distinctly sweeter and definitely betrays added sugar. Either they increased the sugar or I missed it the first time.

This is about as far from a partydrink rum can get. It is truly aged, smokey, leatherly, oakey and smells of an old library. To be enjoyed quietly, late at night. You'll like this if you like cigars, aged scotch and pseudo-intellectual drunk talking.

This rums comes in a nice package with a good looking bottle and a nice black canister (picture). It even comes with a small booklet. A quality package in my opinion.

You have to let this rum rest in the glass for a while. At first you get som sticky alcohol and not much aromas but after a while you can sense fruit, vanilla, spice and oak. A lot off different aromas in the glass.

When you taste this rum you get a spice, smoke, oak and some sweetness. Not as sweet as I would like it to be but it is still quite smooth. The Angostura 1824 has a long aftertaste with a lot of spice and oak. A bit too harsh for my taste.

This is a sipper but for me I want my rum to be sweeter so I will probaly use this rum as  a mixer. Not very happy with my purchase.

Alkohol: 40 %
Aroma: Ve vůni vosk, včelí plástve, propolis, staré dřevo, působí velmi vyzrále, a nad vším je nezaměnitelný hřebíček s medicinálními tóny.

Like jazz, so much going on with the flavors in this rum. Molasses, oak, citrus, honey, smoke, leather all come to the pallette. A wonderful and complex nose. As someone else said an intellectual's rum but maybe that's because I'm half drunk listening to Sigor Rós. Lastly never ever mix this. Enjoy!

Had this at a rum dinner at Esotico, and was not prepared for how this was going to taste. I’d had 1919 several times previously, and consider it a good value for the style and profile.

The funk on this rivals Jamaican rums, not so much competitively, but comparatively and totally complementary to them. It is a very different hogo, reminiscent of a whole other set of tropical fruits usually present in Jamaican rums (Chiefly, bananas). This is more on the guava and soursop side, a little bit of creaminess from the mamey and a touch of maracuya. The nose matches the palate - powerful, but not overwhelming.

The price point here in the US is a little higher than it should be, but this is a serious and seriously delicious rum.

I lied 1919 for smothness but when I tried the next - 1824 - I was shocked. It turned very much better! Perfect balance of softness and rich taste with excellent agening. I was impessed!

Nice flavored rum, but loaded with added sugar. Too bad. Vanilla and caramel come through, as well as some smokiness. A shame it's been sweetened so heavily.

Very lovely rum. It has a great and refined balance. Not a sweet rum but very smooth, with a slight oaky tobaco finish
