Now, I have never tasted a rum aged in wood other than oak (this spent some time in a Zebra-wood cask!). Its definitely different... the color is unlike any rum I have ever seen (dark mahogany red). There is noticeable sedimentation on the bottom of the bottle (my guess the Zebra-wood is high in tannins) and they either had very limited filtration, or none whatsoever.
It has the familiar cachaca smell - pungent green, vegetal, olives... but this fades to stranger, more unrecognizable smells of tropical spices. The taste reveals a strong influence from the zebra-wood - a significant spiciness, with a tongue-clinging flavor that reminds me of cinnamon and clove. Your tongue is left numb for maybe 5-10 mins afterwards!

The Tanager has a nose of apricot fruit leather, so that's cool! Unfortunately the taste does not follow at all, just coming across like very green, woody bananas. It's smooth enough in the mouth, but there's a definite burn afterward, which is never fun.
